Was surprised at the size and performance, wasnt expecting such an excellent effect, puts a surgical edge on almost any blade
OK, first the bad. There is no grit rating for this, and it’s not like I didn’t try to find one. I contacted HH, who got in touch with the makers, who couldn’t help. I say WHAT??? What kind of manufacturer doesn’t know the specifications of the stuff they are making? Anyway, I googled them. In a first for me, the makers are not even on Google. I find this baffling, I mean you wouldn’t buy a whetstone without knowing the grit rating, and a ceramic rod should be no different. By now, I had my teeth into this, and I checked out all 26 different ceramic honing rods I could find for sale, ranging in price from £20 to £110. Believe it or not, only four specified the grit rating. Anyway, I compared it with a rod I already own for my chef’s knives, with a known grit rating of 1500, and I would approximate this one at around 800-1000. On to the good. This is an excellent honing rod, I use it as a first stage before moving on to my 1500 rod to finish off with. It realigns the knife edge very well, and is on a par with the rod that I paid £50 for. I assume because this is on clearance, they will not be getting any more in. You would be mad not to grab one before they all go, especially at this price. I except this to last FOR EVER! Just buy it.
Bought one,as everyone else initially shocked by the sheer size, had mine a year I use it a ridiculous amount, mainly as the steel its designed to be but also as a fine file in repair work,I suspect its a little fragile I've a couple of little chips on the very end ,so don't drop it! All in all incredible value for money, if I lost this one I'd pay 3 times as much for another.... I bought one for my brother.
It handles like a tubular ceramic gladius. Kg/£ value off the charts at discounted price. Not pocket friendly
This is huge! that might just have been mentioned before but it is! Not the smoothest of ceramic rod but it works very well. The size makes it useful for axes, parangs or smaller knives. At this price its well worth getting one. As ever legendary service from HH. Thanks.
Other reviewers have said this, but it bears repeating “ this thing is absolutely enormous, so much so that I'm considering cutting it down a bit with an angle grinder. As it is, it won't fit in the toolbox where the rest of my sharpening kit lives. The Superstick is so large, I really wonder what it's intended for. Machetes? Scythes? Swords? It'll certainly handle the largest kitchen knife you can find. Anyway, it's great value, it'll take you centuries to wear it out, and the round profile makes it ideal for sharpening recurved blades, karambits, kukris and the like. Get one if you have the storage space!
I have used this for further sharpening knives of 12C27 and N695 Bohler steel so far and it does work very well, putting a very keen edge on knives that were "reasonably" sharp at the time. I have not used it on a truly dull knife but I cannot see why it would not produce a good edge on one - it is a fine abrasive after all, but - perhaps - a steel could be applied to a dull edge first, using this ceramic stick to complete the sharpening process. All in all, an excellent sharpening aid - albeit not one that you would "take into the field" given its size. Superb service from the team at HH - as always...!
I bought this sharpener at the same time as buying the Schrade Linerlock305. As everyone else has been saying "Wow" this is one helluva sharpener. Works well provided your knives are reasonably sharp to start with.. Fits brilliantly onto my rucksack, sliding through the small loops on the side, the handle preventing it from slipping out. When not being used, I suppose I could keep it by my front door - it would make an excellent deterrent for some unwanted visitor. My mate thinks it looks like a solid light sabre! (Star Wars). All I know is that it works well and, provided I don't break it, it will probably last longer than me!
