So I kept it and began to re-work this knife, update as follows

Posted by if its not industrial it's broken on 18th Oct 2021

To start with I hated this knife. See my previous review. Tried to use it out in the feild, failed, failed, failed then sucseeded, but only as a kindling splitter using a batton.. Something had to be done, Job 1: Stripped the thick black coating from the grind angle of the blade. Job 2: The exposed faces were poorly ground and pitted, I use a course flat diamond stone and re-surfaced both blade grinds. Job 3: Re-cut a completely new honing bevel. Job 4: Using a new method of de-burring the honed edge, that I may just apply for patenting status, I now have a very effective cutting edge. Still hate the bendy rubber handle, the multi-material sheath, got to replace this with a single piece wrapped leather alternative. Will remove the black finish on the spine and apply a sharp square edge. Many hours spent making this knife begin to work, this knife is presented poorly from Cold Steel, could offer so much more, There is the potential for a good knife, so far the hours spent have been woth it. lets see what happens next

    COLD STEEL SRK COMPACT

Posted by Michael Hodgkinson on 22nd Sep 2021

Ok, straight to the point . . . . this is without doubt the bluntest knife i have ever bought. A knife made out of plasticine would be sharper. And no matter what i do i cannot get a sharp edge on it. I am now going to give it a convex edge. . . . that out of the way, here is my other thoughts. Its light, very comfortable and very grippy. A nice size and the sheath is decent, although the restraining strap is quite loose. NOTE :- the blade is not 5mm as stated in the description ,its actually 4mm. 4.11mm to be exact but i guess the .11 is the blade coating. Do i like this knife? well . . yes. Apart from the horrid edge, which may be something on just my knife, it feels like it would be a good everyday, do all fixed blade utility knife.

    Expected so much more, Disappointed

Don't understand. So many people rate these knives. I'm losing faith in the Cold Steel brand. The SRK compact.j 1, Its blunt, I'm talking butter knife blunt. 2, I hate the sheath. to fussy, press studs, velcro, screws, hard plastic, soft plastic, nylon weave strap.. not my cup of tea. 3, Hate the plastic coatingon the blade, I want to have a sharp square spine on the blade, fire strike, scraper, to do this will ruin the finish, it will also clog my stone when sharpeing. 4, The handle, too small, unconfortable and really not a fan of a soft rubber boulster. In conclusion this reminds me of a single use service knife.More like a Mora or Hutafors but blunt. So not a fan, this is a very disappointing product. I am keepink to my Kershaw for feild and hunting. This becomes a gift for someone who thinks Cold Steel are the dogs do dos

Quality knife for a very reasonable price. Excellent first knife for anyone getting into bushcraft or just collecting

    SRK Compact

Posted by Mr Grumpy Beardy Person on 16th Feb 2021

My new favourite bushcraft knife. Arrived at 3pm and I went straight out to the woods to test it. Built a shelter and processed a fish, perfect, knife especially in conjunction with my Buck Hunter.

    Nice.

Posted by Leigh on 24th May 2020

Beautifully balanced, nice weight. Better suited to general Campcraft tasks than the SRK. Point of balance is right on the edge of the handle. Its so finely balanced that I had some difficulty establishing the exact POB. That makes this an extremely handy & agile knife. Be a good choice if your going in harm's way. Scabbard is Cold Steel's Secure-Ex model. Bit stiff initially but loosens up with use. Once you click it home, it isn't going anywhere. So, all things considered fantastic bang per buck.

Excellent, Just remember to tighten the screws.

Posted by John on 21st May 2020

I love it, It`s extremely light and super sharp out of the box, And the handle is nice and grippy. But, Make sure you check the screws that hold the sheath together as they were loose on mine, I added a couple of drops of thread-locker and tightened them up, A rubber type glue like evo-stick will do if you don't have any to prevent them coming loose again. SRK-C

Posted by John on 14th Apr 2020

The cold steel srk compact just arrived this morning. Having unwrapped it all good , had coating of grease on the blade which was easily cleaned off and having given it a close inspection it's al good . Fit&finish edge sharp and the secure-ex sheath offers a very secure fit plus the addition of lashing points for optimum carry options. Very pleased with my purchase. Recommended !!!!!
