Description

The historical Roach Belly knife was a short blade with a pronounced upswept curve and a sharp point. It was most likely named after the common Roach Fish, which had a similarly round curving belly. It was known in 17th century Britain and quite common in the American Colonies because it was inexpensive and versatile.

Cold Steel’s interpretation of this knife is a nod to the Black Powder Community, which has continued to appreciate the Roach Belly’s economy, versatility and effectiveness. Cold Steel`s version retains the profile of the original but incorporates the latest in modern materials for its construction. The hollow ground blade is made of 4116 Krupp Stainless, expertly heat treated to Rc 56-57, and given a fine sharp edge that’s easy to maintain.

Instead of the traditional wood handle, Cold Steel's is made of tough Polypropylene, so it’s impervious to the elements and won’t swell, shrink, rot or crack the way wood does.

The Roach Belly comes with a button loop nylon sheath. It has a generously sized belt loop that can be used to convert readily to being worn as a neck knife by passing a thong or neck landyard though it.

    Hands off, she's mine

Posted by StevieBoy on 11th Jun 2015

Bought this as a kitchen knife. Unpacked it, looked at it, hefted it , took a few preparatory swings across the top of the cooker and thought "Hmmnnn," and promptly hid it in my pack. I'll get something else to use in the kitchen.

    Top kit.

Bought this for my wife as a replacement for her old Kitchen Devil; had to pry the bugger from her hand, but now she's got nothing but praise for the Roach Belly. As it's her knife I've not yet had a chance to use it, apart from shaving some hair off my arm; impressive! Can see me getting one for myself. Usual great service from H.H.

A MUST HAVE FOR THE PRICE

Posted by Francesco on 4th May 2013

Sharp enough, keeps the edge enough and stainless. Got another one after some weeks of use; I really love the shape, great for food prep. I did a "grip mod" on the handle and a very thin kidex sheath; now it is just lovely.

    Great value all rounder

Posted by Cultcollector on 3rd Jan 2013

This knife is a great all round knife, kitchen use or skinning. Light camp use or other chores. Very sharp a good corrosion resistant steel. The sheath is as to be expected for this price. Given all the variables this is a great buy. If I lost mine I'd replace it no questions. + 1 * for the guys at HH

    Good, simple, solid!

Cold Steel do it again! Lovely simple design, sharp and easy to keep sharp. It is nice and compact and easy in the hand. I use mine as a yard knife for cutting allsorts, weeding the garden etc. Handy when I am mushrooming and fishing. Superb service as usual from Heinnie.

    Super little knife

Posted by Michael Goswell on 2nd Mar 2012

I have owned a Roachbelly for some months and fish at sea a lot, this knife is with me every time I go and has given superb service, I was concerned that for the price it wouldn't live up to the reviews but I needn't have worried. I have used it for cutting rope, filleting large cod (and small ones) as well as other species. Never go without it and would be happy to pay more for the same product when mine wears out.
