The historical Roach Belly knife was a short blade with a pronounced upswept curve and a sharp point. It was most likely named after the common Roach Fish, which had a similarly round curving belly. It was known in 17th century Britain and quite common in the American Colonies because it was inexpensive and versatile.

Cold Steel’s interpretation of this knife is a nod to the Black Powder Community, which has continued to appreciate the Roach Belly’s economy, versatility and effectiveness. Cold Steel`s version retains the profile of the original but incorporates the latest in modern materials for its construction. The hollow ground blade is made of 4116 Krupp Stainless, expertly heat treated to Rc 56-57, and given a fine sharp edge that’s easy to maintain.

Instead of the traditional wood handle, Cold Steel's is made of tough Polypropylene, so it’s impervious to the elements and won’t swell, shrink, rot or crack the way wood does.

The Roach Belly comes with a button loop nylon sheath. It has a generously sized belt loop that can be used to convert readily to being worn as a neck knife by passing a thong or neck landyard though it.

    Blade on a budget

Posted by Jack on 26th Nov 2019

I needed a cheap knife for camping and fishing so I decided to buy one of these, after moderate use im extremely happy. It comes hair shaving sharp and performs all cutting duties well. If you need a no nonsense outdoor knife on a budget I'd highly recommend getting one of these.

    Cool design.

Posted by GK on 29th Jul 2019

I like this knife, it came sharp and ready for some serious use indoors and out. The knife is very comfortable to use but for me the handle has a too modern/ kitchen look about it. I would like to see it with a more traditional look especially with the reference to muzzle loading. If you want a good knife for camp cooking, fishing or skinning the Roach Belly will serve you well. The plastic sheath is neat and compliments the modern design of an old style knife. Well worth the money.

    Fisherman's knife

Posted by AC on 6th Apr 2019

I've had this knife for about a year now, I was impressed when it came and after a year it's my favourite and most used knife. I bought it and use it for sea fishing - cutting up bait and gutting my catch. It's the perfect size and shape for these tasks; (it's ideal for outdoor food prepping as well). It lives in my tackle box but I clean it after every trip and there's no sign of corrosion at all, it doesn't keep an edge very long, but sharpens up very easily. For the price, it's a steal, if you've got a use for it (every fisherman should have one!)

    First impression.

I did a huge amount of online research before ordering. I'm pleased to say this knife was JUST what I expected it to be - quality and appearance. I'd had a doubt about the handle being suitable for my particular needs. I'm pleased to say that my doubt was totally needless. Excellent service - took only two weeks to arrive in Spain. I'll definitely be ordering one or two other knives I "have my eye on!"

nice little knife for food prep

Posted by Daniel on 17th Oct 2018

This is a nice little knife which i mainly use as my ''travel'' kitchen knife usually in congunction with a cheap plastic choping board. It dose this task well and has even helped make and carve a sunday roast the only few gripes i have with it is it could be a little bigger (longer and wider blade) but the small package and nice plastic sheath mean its my go to when i just want to throw something in my bag of ingridents when I head out the door.

What is this knife for, exactly?

Posted by SigSi on 3rd Jun 2018

I really can't work out what this knife is intended for. It's based on a historic pattern and described as a nod to the black-powder community', but obviously, with a plastic handle, plastic sheath and stainless blade, it's of no use to re-enactors. I was enticed by the colourful name and low price, and I thought it looked like a useful kitchen knife. And it is just that “ it's extremely sharp, and the deep belly on the curved blade makes light work of chopping through veggies. But how many kitchen knives come in a sheath? That would suggest that the Roach Belly is meant for outdoor carry and use, but it seems too lightweight and flimsy for that to me. The real problem is the handle, which is just moulded plastic “ not G10, not Zytel, just plain, cheap polypropylene. I would definitely not trust this knife the way I would a Mora or Hultafors or similar. With full tang riveted construction and a more substantial handle material, this could have been a really interesting knife worth paying a bit more for, but as it is, it's a serviceable cook's knife with a colourful name and a nice picture of a musket on the blade, nothing more than that.
