The historical Roach Belly knife was a short blade with a pronounced upswept curve and a sharp point. It was most likely named after the common Roach Fish, which had a similarly round curving belly. It was known in 17th century Britain and quite common in the American Colonies because it was inexpensive and versatile.
Cold Steel’s interpretation of this knife is a nod to the Black Powder Community, which has continued to appreciate the Roach Belly’s economy, versatility and effectiveness. Cold Steel`s version retains the profile of the original but incorporates the latest in modern materials for its construction. The hollow ground blade is made of 4116 Krupp Stainless, expertly heat treated to Rc 56-57, and given a fine sharp edge that’s easy to maintain.
Instead of the traditional wood handle, Cold Steel's is made of tough Polypropylene, so it’s impervious to the elements and won’t swell, shrink, rot or crack the way wood does.
The Roach Belly comes with a button loop nylon sheath. It has a generously sized belt loop that can be used to convert readily to being worn as a neck knife by passing a thong or neck landyard though it.

The best knife I've bought this year. I've used mine for carving the sunday roast, rough outdoor use, general carry while out shooting and just about every other knife related task. The 4116 steel is just brilliant, holds an edge well, sharpens razor sharp on any sharpening media very easily even in my amateur hands and never rusts. The sheath is a bit mean but it's FIFTEEN POUNDS. If you're on the fence at this point just buy it! Buy two!
Super sharp from the box. Shame about the cheap sheath
This knife holds a phenomenal razor edge and is easy to sharpen. It excels at cutting meat and preparing game. A bit of self-adhesive tape on the handle makes the friction-fit sheath more secure. It's effective blade shape and light weight would make it highly suitable for military use, see the very positive review at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3QCa17yPHM
Really good knife. Excellent for it's price Use it from the field to the kitchen. Very handy blade with sharp edge, steel is hard enough to resist the wear and stay sharp while still can be sharpened in the field easily by using good stone (e.g. like mine - Fallkniven DC-4) Grip could be a little bit longer (1-2 cm) to better fit into my hand. though it could be fine for other users. Sheath is useful enough, while nothing outstanding comparing with the knife itself.
i have used this knife for preparing food for a barbecue. it cuts meat very well. easily cleaned, very light, good knife for food. maybe a bit light for general survival duties, but very sharp!
I originally bought one of these for my girlfriend and liked it so much I had to get one myself. The design of the knife is very versatile, it's great for camping and bushcraft, and its tactical applications shouldn't be underestimated either. Came razor-sharp out of the box and holds its edge well. Fantastic value for money.
Useful size, useful shape, good edge, reasonable steel, very light and even a reasonable sheath!! At this price the only thing I'd change is some way of securing the knife in that sheath. Can't fault it otherwise, camping or kitchen it's sound!
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT ALL ROUNDER. LIGHT, PRACTICAL AND HOLDS A GOOD EDGE. COLD STEEL DOES IT AGAIN !
