The historical Roach Belly knife was a short blade with a pronounced upswept curve and a sharp point. It was most likely named after the common Roach Fish, which had a similarly round curving belly. It was known in 17th century Britain and quite common in the American Colonies because it was inexpensive and versatile.
Cold Steel’s interpretation of this knife is a nod to the Black Powder Community, which has continued to appreciate the Roach Belly’s economy, versatility and effectiveness. Cold Steel`s version retains the profile of the original but incorporates the latest in modern materials for its construction. The hollow ground blade is made of 4116 Krupp Stainless, expertly heat treated to Rc 56-57, and given a fine sharp edge that’s easy to maintain.
Instead of the traditional wood handle, Cold Steel's is made of tough Polypropylene, so it’s impervious to the elements and won’t swell, shrink, rot or crack the way wood does.
The Roach Belly comes with a button loop nylon sheath. It has a generously sized belt loop that can be used to convert readily to being worn as a neck knife by passing a thong or neck landyard though it.

doesnt come with a cordura sheath any more , so carnt see it being a neck knife either , but for the price a nice light duty blade
Excellent service and delivery from Heinie. Had to fight this knife out of the shrink wrap with the Mora Companion I also ordered at the same time. Wouldn't a cardboard box be easier? Now has a mora style plastic sheath. I always tend to wreck cordura ones so this suits me as the knife is quite secure.. This knife looks good. Bought this for prepping in the kitchen and it works well (as it is very sharp)on meat and veg and tofu !!!!! The profile and slimness of the blade makes rocking easy as your cutting which is .useful. My hands are not large and the handle fits well and is comfortable and secure even when wet. . Easy to clean after use. It appears to be quite strong and would not worry about using outside for moderate tasks.
Lovely knife with an ok plastic sheath used to cut down a load of cardboard the other night and still shaving hair off my arm just gave it a couple runs over a very fine grit shaper and now it's frightening how sharp this blade is Fantastic
Thanks to HH ordered Friday Delivered Saturday. I bought this knife for camp cooking duties and it certainly excels at kitchen tasks. Razor sharp out of the box. the handle is a bit short for serious work , I do not have huge hands, but that does not matter for food prep.
For £15.95 you can't go wrong, razor sharp OTB, very light & agile, I find the handle has enough grip, but if you feel like it needs a bit more I'd suggest Self Amalgamating Tape. Mine came with the newer Polypropylene sheath, which has the look, feel & capabilities of a Mora sheath, extremely happy with the product & I would highly recommend buying one.
Bought solely as a camp knife for cooking tasks. Arrived moderately sharp out of the box, but 5 mins on a waterstone and strop brought it to razor sharpness. Its worth noting that this did not come with a cordura sheath as advertised, but a rigid plastic one that locks the blade in nicely. Outstanding service from HH as always, its nice to see a company with customer care and satisfaction as a top priority.
Bought as a kitchen knife for carving etc, perfect shape and razor sharp out of the box, I am sure it will give years of good service, the blade steel is supposed to be pretty good, time will tell in that respect, the sheath was okay but hardly matters as it will never get used.
I bought this to double up on the front of my Ka Bar cutlass machete as a smaller blade when using the machete rather than also carry my bushcraft knife . It has a very good quality sheath which holds the knife securely ... fit a short lanyard for pulling it clear ..... the blade is surprisingly beefy with good jimping to assist grip on choking up. I like it and for the money its outstanding
