Not as good as it should be ?

Posted by Mike on 30th Apr 2020

Victorinox pioneer has been available from 1957 ! The swiss army used it from 1961 as the soldier until 2007/8

Pioneer was called the sturdy boy way back then and it is just so ! I have had an early model for decades and it is I think the best pocket tool Victorinox offers ? Even now !

So in 2017 I believe the pioneer X was offered , the model here with scissors that so ,so many wanted ? My self included !

Well the knife obviously puts on weight, a lot of weight in fact ,it also gains a layer

The scissors are taken from the large 111mm models ,Not that they are any bigger than the 91mm models but the nail knick is on the other side , and that's the bug bare !
I can't really understand the need to do that ,and find it really annoying too !

In terms of quality the knife is very good as one expects from the king of the pocket knife makers but , the mould for the alox scales is showing it's age now as when you view them from the edges the edge line is all wavy and uneven , the finish is also a bit rough where the oxidized coating has flaked off , a shame as the alox scales are otherwise very smart !

These knives are hard use models and are built like a tank even though a slip joint they have great spring tension and uk friendly

Great service from HH as always

    Well used knife

Posted by Mitchell on 7th May 2019

I brought this 2 years ago from this site purely because I wanted to own a SAK, it looked cool and that was really it.

Fast forward a year and a half and I ended up joining the army and it's the one knife I've used consistently, I want to upgrade eventually but I really just can't find the right knife at the moment, and owning this useful tool prevents me spending money on an upgrade.

I'll stick to this for a long time I wouldn't mind getting black scales for it though, and eventually when I've got the cash saved I'll phase it out for a leatherman wave, and a fixed blade.

I would not say no to this knife it's UK legal, light and has plenty of useful tools, looks great and has really proved it's use to me.

I am confident it will prove its worth to you also.

Perfect for domestic and office EDC

Posted by Alijami on 23rd Mar 2019

I am a late convert to Alox. I hate T&T so it makes sense. I already have the Pioneer which I consider the perfect urban EDC compromise, that is legality, loadout and weight. I use the Farmer for more rural EDC. The Pioneer-X I consider to be the perfect domestic and office EDC where the scissors are useful and the blade shape is generally considered non-threatening.

Previously on my desk I used a Tech-Tool 5, finding that the scissors and awl were the most frequently used tools. The Pioneer-X has both (plus a can-opener) at 97g vs 151g. That is important when removed from the desk to the pocket.

Can't add much to the published spec or to what is already known about Victorinox fit and finish or that, of course, it is sharp out of the box.

    My favourite everyday SAK

Posted by Slick on 20th May 2018

Either this or it's sister in dungarees, the Climber, is with me everyday. Both offer the best combination of everyday useful items. The Climber has a couple of extra tools, but since the demise of wine corks, a second blade and a multipurpose hook' are rarely missed. I like the Pioneer X as sits simply smarter looking.

    Just about perfect

Posted by Daniel on 12th Mar 2017

Victorinox have a deserved reputation for excellent products and this knife does not disappoint. The selection of tools is just about perfect for a general 'urban' EDC being both practical and compact. The alox-scales feel wonderful in the hand, making the knife a real pleasure to use. Unless you specifically require a different set of tools on your knife, this is the one to get.

    So good

Been waiting on this model for a while and it doesn't disappoint, good strong spring and of course the scissors make it the ultimate edc .
    A must for the pocket.
