The Old Timer Splinter Carving Knife from Schrade will keep your hands busy for many a long evening.

This tool is a great introduction to the art of carving and creating items from wood. This folding pocket knife contains six different blades and gouges, from a straight cutting edge, three curved gouges with different radii, and a right angle gouge.

The folding blades are stowed in the Delrin handle, which is smartly set off with metal bolsters. The metal backsprings ensure that the blades are held strongly open, but can easily be closed when not in use.

An excellent starter tool for a life spent carving.

Duller than dull, and easily folds.

Posted by Jorge on 10th Jan 2025

So, I appreciate knives dont always come sharp but theres dull and then theres DULL! This was the latter. Its clumsy and difficult to use when whittling small hand based projects, I imagine it would be better carving a flat tabletop piece such as a panel, or spoon. But anything like hand whittling and the tools are a little awkwardly positioned to get proper usage. I wish I'd have returned it.

    Not a bad little tool.

I knew what I was getting into, you only get what you pay for , however I didn't want to blow 100 pounds plus on the Flexcut equivalent. It came very blunt and took lots of work to get it half decent. Now it's reasonable sharp it's great for Basswood or Green Silver Birch carving. I love the old school look and am pleased I got it.

    Poorly made.

Knife should not have passed quality control inspection. Handle was badly finished. Blades needed sharpening, which is fine, but one of them needed a lot of work. I don’t have a problem because of the price but the overall impression was one of lack of quality control. Hard for Heinnie as packaging does not allow for inspection at this end. Schrade Old Timer is just a name from the past. This product is made in China.

A good tool for the price, with one serious flaw.

Posted by Crispin on 19th Nov 2021

A versatile set of tools for whittling & carving needs. I really wanted something UK carry friendly (no locking blade) that could reasonably be used to carve, make a spoon, etc and didn't cost too much for me to carry and let others use. This fits that set of requirements admirably. The general fit and finish is also very good for the price, with one key exception: Some of the tools (the flat chisel, the main knife and most severely the round gouge) sit too high up in the body in the closed position, meaning small portions of the sharp surfaces are actually exposed and posing a hazard to hands if not handled carefully. In my mind this is not really acceptable in a pocket tool. There is plenty of space for the tools to sit lower in the body but the mechanism keeps them too high. I don't know if this is a fault with the specific one I was sent, or intrinsic to the design of this model - I intend to message the usually excellent HH customer services to find out.

great tool but keep a sharpener handy as blade edges dull fast.
