    Bowie knives

Posted by Ivor Edwards on 9th Sep 2021

As a young man I worked full time using bowie knives at work iin a slaughter gang working on peacetime , so speed was the necessity. I watched other men at work and noticed that every few minutes they would stop to sharpen their knives on a steel . They would use an assortment of finely ground down knives very light with thin blades. I decided to go and buy a 9 inch bowie bullalo hunters knife . It was the best decision I could have made. After a while other slaughter guys asked I I could obtain the same type of knife for them which I did. I have worked on thousands of cattle , pigs sheep etc.in a couple of days over a number of years . You will not find a better knife to use for the job than a good bowie knife. .you don't have to keep Sharpening them and the weight of the blade does the work for you . I once saw a colleague cut a large pig clean in half with a six inch bowie knife I obtained for him. He cut it clean down the middle of it's backbone with little effort . I bought a 11 inch stag rough rider bowie from this firm and I would not swap it for a bowie which retails for 3 times the price. This knife for the price is unbelievable and up there with the best. I love the design. In the last week I have bought four 11inch bowies a 12 inch bowie 4 of which are Rough Ryders . I know my knives as I earnt a living with them and you want beat a bowie in my book. I love my bowie knives , little wondervthe old Buffalo hunters used them . They have so many uses it is unbelievable. ....those are the facts of the matter.

    Rough Ryder Stag Bowie

Not quite sure what I expected from this knife. I don’t go hunting, so wanted something that looked good, felt intimidating in the event of a break in and in case society completely falls apart! I know it only costs £52.95 but I had hoped for a little more. The stag handle looked noticeably less impressive than the picture, the sheath smelt stale replete with mould spots, the blade length is 26.5 not the 30.0 that is stated, the gap where the hilt meets the blade is surprisingly bad, it isn’t sharp at all and the blade has nicks, marks and scratches on it. I have pictures of all of these if needed. I understand that it’s inexpensive, but it makes me wonder whether I would see a noticeable step up in quality if I added another £100. It’s an impressive size but it isn’t an impressive knife. I am underwhelmed.

Bought this because I was looking for a giant Bowie and the stated blade length of 30cm, but it's "only" 26.5cm, very disappointed on that count. Don't much like the sheath, but that's down to personal taste. Otherwise it's a great package for the price.

Wonderful lump of metal, how they do it for the money is a mystery. Not sure if it would be my first choice for a survival knife though.

THAT's not a knife; THIS is a knife!

Truly a monster of a knife! The data on this item doesn't quite prepare you for the size and weight of it in the hand. It made me smile; it made laugh. It really is a whopper. I take my hat off to Rough Rider once again for their work on this - excellent materials and finish at a remarkably affordable price. I appreciate that some might find aspects of this product unappealing - the sheath, for example. might be considered 'ugly' but is totally consistent with the design of the knife itself. Highly recommended.

    Rough Rider Stag Bowie

A BIG knife, I bought it as much from curiosity as anything. Handle's well made with no play or wobble. It's sharpish but has a definite burr on the edge so some time with a strop is called for and I'm sure that'll improve it greatly. I'm not too keen on the sheath, hence 4 stars, it's well made with thick leather but ugly, not really a problem as it's hanging on a wall :)

Awesome knife .what a monster well made good balance .Great feel in the hand ,You could level the borneo jungles with this .BUT the cutting edge angle was a let down and needed some serious re stoning to bring it up to standard .which was the only minor gripe . the sheath is real leather and wellmade .and a delight to the eye . Well pleased with my purchase
