Rough Ryder Camp Knife 18

Very pleased with this one. Nice traditional style. Very well made and finished. All the blades operate smoothly and the main blade is nice and sharp.

This knife is loosely based on the pocket knife Isambard Kingdom Brunel used. It's an interesting knife to collect. However: The "second blade" is not a blade. It is a can opener. You are supposed to knock it through the the lid with the stud resting on the cans rim, then cut upwards. That is why the spring is so stiff. I very strongly suggest you wear gloves if attempting this. It is extremely unforgiving. I found that out the hard way. It's worth buying as a conversation piece, but if you want a useable knife I suggest you buy the Rough Rider Kamp King instead. Also sold on this site.

Firstly super service from Heinnie received next day on standard free delivery! Bought both this and a rough rider Barlow. Barlow was OK other than needing a thorough cleaning up, but this one was atrocious. Super oily, and mega hard to open either the can opener or bottle opener blades. Nearly took my right thumbnail off just trying to open it up! A few minutes with both machine oil and WD40 didn't help at all so back it went to Hennie for a full refund. Buyer beware, unlike all of my previous rough riders this certainly wasn't worth the 18.95! Sure, if you really want a cheap 'camp knife' buy two and return the one that's awful (think cheap Chinese watches) but I really hoped of more considering their track history!

Everything - almost - is great on mine. A colleague guessed it cost around £70! No broken nails although bottle opener is hardest to open. Main blade razor sharp, no gaps, scales nicely faired in, but nothing is perfect and the main blade spring is very weak, which is a pity. It barely snaps open and closes with minimal pressure, like a UKPK. Not unusable but not robust-feeling. Apart from that, which is also a criticism levelled against the Boker camp knife at ten times the price, it's well worth having.

This pocket knife is old school, and if that's what you are looking for, you'll love it. Inexpensive, the jigged bone inlay is nicely done, the knife itself being a good weight in your pocket. No pocket clip, no modern materials, a blast from the past. The drawback is the blades. Ugly Chinese manufactured "440 Stainless Steel" (Hmm...). The small blade on my knife was almost a blank there was so little edge to it: took a fair bit of work to get it acceptably sharp. The larger blade wasn't much better though at least someone had tried. The spike however was needle-sharp: the flat edged screwdriver and bottle opener had an acceptable finish. Long story short: if you want an old school camp knife buy this one and be prepared to put a bit of work into it. I'm very happy with mine, now. Usual lightning-fast delivery by HH.

Initial impressions are that this is well worth the money. I have no idea how the knife will wear, but I just bought it for my slipjoint collection. But even if it only lasts six months its worth the £16 it costs Fit and finish is decent.......as good as some ( but not all) case knives I have. If you have access to polishing equipment you can have it gleaming like a beauty. No blade play and very sharp from the box. I did have to clean off the excel polish with a cloth but that's no trouble. Recommended....well worth the money Ruukuu

I have many RR knives.. this is my favourite.. thick sturdy blades.. quality is excellent.. if you purchase this knife.. you will not be disappointed ..!!

I have looked at these Rough Rider knives for a while now and have been dubious about buying a made in China knife. I have a few pocket knifes, some Swiss and Sheffield ones I've had many years that are excellent. Finally decided to buy this knife to see what it would be like for the money. The fit and finish is very, very good on a par with most knives I have and better than some including sad to say some of the English ones. A couple of the blades are very tough to open but I think with use and lubrication that they'll ease up. Overall I'm very surprised and very pleased. I'll now be buying other RRs. I have had this knife must be over three years now and it still looks like new... it was my first time buying from H.H. the quality of the products and the low cost.. and the now " famous delivery speed "...keeps me coming back.. you know I've got to laugh..i printed the captcha as i see it......and if it doesn't like it... it scrubs everything you've written...guess how many times I've wrote this review..?????
