I bought this axe from Heinnie a couple of years ago. I like to use things for a while before reviewing them. This axe does not quite have the fit and finish that more ‘high end’ axes may have and you will have to do a little work to it to get it properly sharp, I also cleaned off the gloss varnish on the helve on my axe, which much improved the feel of the axe. After two years of heavy use, de-limbing, felling and lots and lots of splitting, I would have to say that for the money, this axe is superb value. The steel keeps an excellent edge, is suitably tough, doesn’t chip or roll - even when splitting harder woods such as green Oak, and most importantly, the head is still rock solid on the helve. I am quite a fan of Prandi axes after my experience with this axe. I would definitely recommend this axe as a cheaper alternative to other more expensive brands.
I bought this believing it to be a good one. Unfortunately I was wrong very wrong. The head is not finished properly, there are burrs on the sides that need smoothing. The varnish was rough and hiding the fact that the handle had started to spalt, the grain was off centre by 22 degrees and the wood underneath the varnish had not been finished to any reasonable standard.
This isnt a Gr¤nsfors Bruk axe and doesnt have the fine degree of finishing or detail, but it is a fraction of the price. I read good reviews on the functionality of this axe and decided to buy one. These reviews were pretty accurate, this it is a solid working tool. It is well made and holds its edge well. Its easy to sharpen with a file, whet stone and strop and you can get it razor sharp. When sharp it cuts through branches, saplings and small trees with ease. I found it really fun to use and enjoyed how it would cut through trunks. The handle appears coated with a fine lacquer when you buy it. I sanded this off and treated the wood with boiled linseed oil to get a better finish, it came up a treat. Weight and size wise rhis axe is not small and just usable with one hand. With two hands it cuts deep and throws out big chips. In summary this is a functional, well made axe and great value for money.
