Ontario RAT I D2 Satin 18

Any one looking for 2 knives one as light EDC to slip in your pocket and a second for out door use, cooking, bushcraft etc with a budget of around 100 quid can't go wrong with theses two knives. The larger of the two the RAT 1 feels so good nice weight distribution sits in both hand and pocket well, the smaller knife just as good, light, unobtrusive, both D2 steel, good clip and scales, well put together.

Brilliant service and shipping, arrived with in 3 days includeing an age verification check that was completed very quickly and painlessly. Knife seems good not had a chance to try it out yet.

Budget, well made folder. This pocket knife is on a larger side of a pocket knives however not to big(except carrying in UK). Sharp out of the box, good pocket clip, decent steel- D2 in my case. Flipping open with one hand is no problem. Plastic scales are not bad, grippy enough. If I can point out any problems it will be blade. Grind is not even on both sides. Not much but visible. But it's £50 work knife, so nothing to be bothered about. It is my second one and it was worth it to pay extra for D2.

First off, a mention to the legendary Heinnie Haynes customer service. Wanted this knife in black, was out of stock so back ordered it with a 4 week wait. They actually got the knife to me in less than 2 weeks and emailed me to explain it was on the way. You can't beat this level of service and care for customers. Now to the knife. I bought this as a big do-it-all knife. To carry in my pocket when outside in the garden and shed, and to take on camping trips when a small legal folding knife would not fit the bill. I knew this was not the best looking knife you could get, but I just wanted utility, I didn't care about looks, and the price at just north of £50 was great. Now I have the knife I can say it is everything I expected and more. Razor sharp out of the box, and once I eased the mechanism with a 50 or so opens, I can now flick it open very easily with a push of my thumb, and one handed closing is easy too. The ergonomics on the knife are top notch. I have average size hands and this fits perfectly with my thumb sitting on the gimping at the back of the blade and the fingers locking nicely around the body. The lock is very secure so you can really push down to cut and be reassured it will take the pressure. D2 steel is going to work great with this knife, not done any serious work to dull it yet, but I imagine it will hold the edge really well, and resharpening it should be pretty easy. I did read reviews with complaints about blade centring, but my knife is perfecly centred when in the body with no play in any direction when extended. This feels like a knife worth way more than the price you pay, the only clue about the budget origins being the printing on the knife blade which is a little rough. But who care about that? Not me, I bought this knife to get serious stuff done and I am more than delighted with it. The only problem now is I know I wont' be able to resist buying the Rat II

Finally got round to buying a RAT1 in D2. Was amazed by the overall build quality of this knife. At a shade over £50 it puts many of the other supposedly high-end' models to shame. Fit and finish were perfect, the blade was excellent and more importantly, it felt a knife you could actually use. Solid construction makes the knife feel safe in use. Likely to be a favourite for many years to come. Definitely low price excellence. Brilliant HH service and delivery as usual.

I'm by no means a knife expert but when I say this is a true work of engineering perfection I mean it. This is a solid brute of a knife, the blade is perfectly central the lock up is fantastic the edge is flawless, if you need a big knife to use round the yard then this guy is the one. I'll be ordering the little brother next. This is truly the king of the £50 folding range. If you're looking at higher quality folding knives but don't want to hurt your wallet too much, this is about the best bang for your buck quality and value wise and you won't feel too bad about dirtying it up. Scales: - Entirely adequate FRN - Ergonomic feel, gives a sturdy grip Blade: - D2 tool steel is much better than you'll usually find in this price range - Out of the box edge it comes with is easily sharp enough - Has a tiny choil that does make sharpening easier. - No noticeable blade play. Construction: - Excellent overall, nothing feels at all loose - Blade centering is perfect (on mine at least) - Action is quite smooth, easily opened and closed with one hand - Standard hex screws for disassembly and cleaning. Fixtures: - Belt clip can be changed to tip up or down on either side to allow for left hand use. - Lanyard hole - Thumb stud on both sides for ambidextrous use. If you have £50 burning a hole in your pocket or just need a decent knife, this (or its slightly smaller cousin RAT 2 D2) is a total no-brainer.

I have one of these knives and consider it a lightweight Buck110 (which I've had for over 30 years), the only thing I did to my Rat was to curve the blade to more of a drop point, I simply rounded it slightly on a belt sander taking of barely 1mm of blade length. It's an outstanding knife, a proper man sized knife. Highly recommended

Sort of poked around the web looking at a few reviews, and most refer to the AUS8 (?iirc) version. Then stumbled upon a reference to a D2 version and called Heinnie on the off chance they might have one, having bought a knife off them +-10yrs ago. As luck would have it..voila!! Living on a boat, I have this thing about getting gear which can keep going when I can't, and the D2 RAT fills the bill and then some. Ignore the comments about it being too big. It isn't. Knives are like life rafts, when you really need one an ocean liner is what you want, and you can carve your own one with this. If all the world worked like Heinnie, the high street would have vanished and homelessness along with it. Their service is that good you should just buy anything off them to experience it.
