When designing the BRONCO, Boker set themselves ambitious goals. It should be at the state-of-the-art of technical possibilities and offer optimal functionality with regard to modern needs. For this purpose, it should have the following characteristics:

- Universal and optimal usability for all professional outdoor users such as bushcrafters, campcrafters, survivalists, cross-country hikers, hunters, SAR teams and others. - A blade made of CPM steel at the highest level of metallurgical possibilities - A handle that fits comfortably in the hand even when working for long periods of time, completely encloses the tang throughout and does not dissipate heat from the hand when cold - A high quality leather sheath that can be worn with or without a dangler, protects the knife from loss and damage, has a socket for a firestarter and is fitted with one - 100% manufacturing in Solingen/Germany - A moderate price with regard to the equipment

With the Boker Bronco these ambitious requirements were met in the following way: The CPM-3V was developed by Crucible Industries LLC - the specialist and worldwide market leader in powder metallurgical steels - to provide unprecedented shock-load tolerance, breakage elasticity and splinter resistance with a phenomenal edge retention and hardness of 62-63 HRC. These properties of the powder-metallurgical carbon steel were achieved, among other things, by a precisely adjusted chromium content of 7.5%. In this way, the positive properties of the alloying element Cr, such as the increase in wear resistance and hardenability, could be utilised while maintaining a fine microstructure. The universal wide drop-point blade with a high-set saber grind has always been the hunter's preferred shape for both big and small game and is also suitable for both fine tasks such as stick feathering and for the more coarse, such as the obligatory batoning. The tang is continuous and protrudes a few millimetres from the end of the handle. This ensures maximum stability and the tang can also withstand powerful blows with a log or other object. A short part of the back of the blade forms sharp 90° edges on both sides for striking sparks from the included firestarter.

TPE - thermoplastic elastomer - was chosen as the handle material, which completely encloses the tang and has a structure that provides a good grip in any loading direction. TPE is resistant, elastic, non-slip and has low heat conductivity. The knife therefore lies securely in the hand in all weather and working conditions and does not drain the strength from the fingers in wet and cold conditions. Compared to conventional elastomers, TPE also has the advantage of reducing the burden on the environment during production, as this is carried out purely physically and the lengthy and energy-consuming vulcanisation of chemically cross-linked elastomers is not necessary.

The knife is equipped with a quiver leather sheath - the supreme discipline in sheath construction - with a deep and firm fit of the knife. The knife is thus protected in the best possible way against both loss and damage when carried, without requiring a damage-prone lock that makes quick access difficult. A removable dangler allows for either a high carrying position on the belt or a low position under the hip belt of the touring backpack. In addition, the knife is equipped with a 9.3 cm firestarter / metal match from the market leader Light My Fire, which finds a place in a wide, tight-fitting leather loop firmly integrated into the piping.

This makes the Boker BRONCO a compact, versatile and complete wilderness and survival tool that is up to any situation.

    Love child

If a Garberg mated with a BM Pukko this would be the outcome, great shape and handle. Awesomely tough 63 3v steel, strops to hair popping, seath barley average but that's only a storage vessel.

    Very poor performing knife

Posted by jaime heath on 14th Nov 2024

Very poor performing knife for CPM-V3 @ 62-63 HRC, blade dulls very quickly and rolls easy with just light carving. Constantly having to resharpen/strop, possibly a very bad heat treatment. Leather sheath isn’t fit for purpose, becomes very loose after a few days and blade falls out very easily, fire starter no longer secure. I’d like to say this was just a one off but this is a replacement for the first one I had that was sent back with exactly the same issues. After looking at other reviews online I can now see I am not the only one with the same complaints. It’s a very nice looking knife and very comfortable in the hand, it’s just a shame Boker have gotten this one so wrong. Many thanks to the folks at Heinnie for their top notch service, no complaints there at all

    Several months later….

5 star knife, no the heat treat is not as good as the benchmade puuko but the shape is fantastic. The sheath is just above bad, a little wet forming and it’s fine, it’s better than the puuko! The blade length is just fantastic for all types of work, but the star of the show is the handle shape and grip texture. The best rubber handle I have ever used and I have had most of them….not just the best rubber but overall in my top three knives for comfort. A great performer. Bold statement but I would carry this over my lion steel and Fallkniven or benchmade equivalents……HH as ever fast and quick

Ticks all boxes, also great value

Posted by Bob Brown on 21st Jan 2023

I wish I had bought this earlier. When compared to the Benchmade Puukko. The Puukko required a new sheath (£20 - £30 (Condor Bushlore is an excellent fit)), did not come with a ferro rod (also £20 - £30), had a round spine so useless with a ferro rod (the thumb pressure point on the bronco's spine has not been worked or gimped, but the remainder of the spine has and is an excellent ferro rod striker, (hence the bump on the spine someone commented on)). Other plusses; The ferro rod tube on the sheath is perfect for a Smiths diamond rod sharpener and the handle is contoured so should be Ok for a Kydex sheath. So someone put some thought into this one. Five stars all round. I will be replacing the dangler 'D' ring with a split ring (sheathed in black aquarium tubing ( just for looks)) as I like to keep the belt loop on my belt and just hook into the ring. Absolutely no regrets with this one.

    Ok it’s officially a keeper

Posted by Longer term review on 6th Jan 2023

Good points, size or length of blade is perfect and love the shape, grind is bang on. Steel is fine, it holds an edge for long enough (not really up the list for me steel) but cpm3v qualities are very good . Takes and holds my convex edge at 20deg all day and then some. Sheath is good not great but good, I don’t need a firesteel on my sheath but it’s included so happy days. Best thing about sheath is that it is tight after using for a while and it has a drainage hole. Often not included on leather sheaths. Best bit is definitely the handle, amazingly comfy, has got tackier as time has gone on without showing noticeable signs of wear. Knife also has exposed pommel unlike other similar offerings. Bad points for me…only two both about the sheath, dangler can be removed but not the ring for it, petty but it’s the little things and the firesteel. Nice to have but rather have space for a sharpener…all in for the price amazing knife five stars and usual HH 5 stars

    Excellent but..

Posted by Reece on 31st Dec 2022

It did come extremely sharp although the grind on mine wasn't symmetrical and very slightly wonky, there was also a bump where a quarter of the spine wasn't ground down to 90 degrees. The leather sheath is excellent though and the knife itself seems to do a bit of everything. I'd still buy this again over some of the other knives available at this price. Pretty much apart from the bits where they've hand finished the edge and the spine it is pretty much perfect.

Boker finally pulls it out of the bag….

Posted by Chris Hampshire on 15th Nov 2022

So I have had a very mixed relationship with Boker branded products, long story short, the only Boker I have kept is from Solingen, no magnums, no Boker plus. They have always been nearly but not quite….I have actually felt sorry for designers who have had collabs with Boker only to see their product not quite hit the mark, however the market seems to love them…..I haven’t. So this was Bokers last chance with me, but like the Great British Bake Off this contestant has pulled it out of the bag at the last minute to win star baker!! Ok so it’s the same price as the basic F1 or a benchmade puukko / lion steel, all sold on HH btw
