Spyderco UK Penknife Drop Point

This is Spyderco's famous UK Penknife (UKPK) with FRN handles and a drop point balde with a flat grind.

We want variety!" It's an often heard sentiment from knife customers and is why Spyderco offers several bestsellers with different handle options. Knife nuts wanting the lightest- weight folders available, gravitate to FRN or fiberglass reinforced nylon handles. Ultra- light FRN is warp resistant, shuns chemicals, and isn't affected by temperature extremes.

Spyderco's non-locking, one-hand open, clip carry folders are called SLIPITS. Starting in 2004, Spyderco launched a folding knife model called the UK Penknife, targeted for carry in the United Kingdom. As the SLIPIT concept gains momentum Spyderco keeps expanding the line with folders in varying sizes, steels and handles. Newly added are Lightweight SLIPITS.

Lightweight UK Penknife blades are held open by a notched-joint at the knife's pivot. When closing the blade the notch produces resistance functionally similar to traditional slip-joint penknives. Heightening control and comfort, Spyderco designers added a deep finger choil positioning the index finger on the bottom of the blade directly under the thumb. This lets you choke up near the cutting edge with comfort and dexterity. A tension-wire clip carries the folder deeply in a pocket, tip-up and ambidextrously.

This version has a CTS BD1N blade steel and black FRN handle.

    Exactly what I wanted!

Such a quality knife, easy one handed open, uk friendly and sharp right out he box, would recommend to everyone, like I said exactly what I wanted and wasn’t left disappointed.

A good blade when you want it

Great knife. Lightweight, small profile - clips to my pocket easily and inconspicuously, and is ready for use when I need it. Might even get another.

    Simple but great

Very good quality EDC blade. It disappears in the pocket and you can’t feel it at all. Been using mine for light edc tasks such as cutting zip ties, opening boxes and a few times as a food prep knife. Works great.

    Lightweight cutting tool

Nothing fancy about this knife, good working tool and EDC, very light, not a heavy duty folder for hard use, but can deal with all EDC tasks, steel takes a nice edge, very similar to VG-10. Would recommend it for any EDC users in the UK.

    Nice pocket light weight

Posted by Rocksloth on 1st Aug 2019

Just got mine, its thin , light , and sharp! looks handsomely odd and handles sweetly, it fits the hand well for such a small knife, the blade is nicely ground and has a firm lock up and notable half stop, seems delicate but when you put it to task you can sense in truth its tough! now if they would just put it out in more colours...... like a red and orange or aqua blue!

    Simply delightful

Posted by Doddy on 27th Mar 2019

I adore this knife. I'm looking for the perfect UK legal friendly enough looking and usefully sized kniife for this country. This is close to perfect. I went for drop point to look less menacing or "st**by" but wish they still did different handle scale colours to help with softening the image of this knife in the eyes of the public. A black handle always looks a bit too stealthy. The blade is lovely and thin, excellent for slicing. Great for veg prep, or cardboard destruction! So so light to hold, and is so compact when closed due to drop point blade profile being so narrow. A modern gents classic that's borderline perfect. When I one hand opened it for the first time, and felt the well engineered snick as I did it, I had a moment of joy for sure!

    Hard to fault

Posted by Jonathan on 6th Oct 2018

I've owned one of these for several years now and almost always have it on me. It's put up with so much and never let me down. The CTS-BD1 blade holds an edge well enough, just a step behind VG-10, but far, far easier to sharpen and I don't think this blade even knows what the word 'rust' means. Absolutely nothing to complain about. Newer models may come with a CTS-BD1N blade, which apparently holds an edge better, I can't speak to that but the model I have was already great enough. I often get called on to help with office IT, stripping wires and cutting plastic zipties as well as opening boxes, but use the same knife in my garden here and there, as well as in the kitchen (after cleaning, duh), it's just handy for almost anything. The CTS-BD1 steel means even cutting fruit and veg won't affect the blade, no patina. A "better" steel like VG-10 needs more care, making it less handy for an EDC as you have to watch what you use it for. I'll happily throw my Spyderco at almost any situation. The handle is where some people will fall out of love with it, not me but it's worth mentioning. Very lightweight FRN, feels like plastic but still has barely a scuff on it. Some people think they prefer G10 but trust me, this thing has fantastic grip, try one out and you won't be disappointed. It's lightweight. Incredibly, incredibly lightweight. So much so that it feels flimsy at first. Years on I know it's not as it's still close to pristine, but if you want to feel like you're holding a sturdy, heavy piece of hardware, you won't get that here. It's almost skeletal. A friend of mine looking to pick up a new knife actually fell in love with my £7 Schrade over the Spyderco just because it was more satisfying to hold. I happily gave him the damn thing. Initial impressions are so deceptive though, the Spyderco has hung in there through being dropped and thrown and used countless times. Ergonomics-wise the choil on this is perfect. If you're not a knife person, it means once the blade is open, there's an indent where the blade and handle meet where your forefinger can sit, making it impossible to start closing the blade. The blade also soft-locks when closed 90 degrees just to make it safer for you, you'd have to work hard to close this on your own fingers. The spideyhole used to open it is, as always, a godsend. I tend to grow my nails long and opening some of my knives becomes a nightmare. With this, and indeed most Spyderco knives, there's a large hole at the top of the blade you can hook with your thumbpad and open the blade safely and easily one-handed. It's light, safe, and easy to use. One important factor for a knife designed for UK EDC is that it looks very non-threatening. Its lightweight frame helps that, and a straightforward, smooth blade reminiscent of kitchen hardware, plus a handle that's functional without aggressive tactical shaping. Nothing about this says "wea**n." People constantly ask to borrow it from me in the office (even the IT guy who keeps saying he needs to buy his own), and never once has anyone given the impression that they were scared by its appearance. I can't imagine your average police officer would care so long as you're not trying to get it into a nightclub with it. Compare to something like the Lansky World Legal which looks lethal, or many Boker or Byrd blades intended as EDC which still have the look of a wea**n more than a tool. The Spyderco UKPK looks about as friendly as a knife can be without being a novelty. Bottom line? You can get better work knives (VG-10 or above blade, heavier handle if you need it, etc) if you want to go deep into triple figures for minimal gains, or pick up a swiss army knife or small multitool if you need to be prepared for anything, but this little treat is perfect for its role as general purpose everyday carry.

The best uk legal carry available.

    Posted by Paulb84 on 28th Dec 2017

Another amazing spyderco, more UK friendly then the standard ukpk as the drop point looks like a friendly duck :-D the highlight is the weight, it's so light, all you g10 snobs out there can rest assured that this FRN is super grippy more so then my spyderco Para 3 with G10. Updated needed guys at H/H this ukpk now comes with CTS-BD1N steel with a 64 hardness rating online forums are comparing it to VG10 and some with S90v, it's above the usual CTS-bd1 and Aus-8 and the Chinese alphabet steel, it has nitrogen added to it to enhance the steel edge retention.
