Handy pocket scissors - SOG Powerlock unneeded.

This kit can easily be turned into standalone pocket scissors. All you need is an M5 x 10 mm bolt, M5 nut and a short length of wire approx 1 mm thick, e.g. a robust paperclip. Lay the scissors down on the bench, short handled blade up. Lay the small plate over the large blade handle (the other way up from the image on this page), with the holes aligned, its small registration notch over the large blade handle's matching notch and the small quadrant cut-out over the large blade handle's bent-up tab. Lay the spring over that, with the short bent end in the small plate's hole. Push the bolt through all three from the top and turn them over. (As a US product, the holes are actually 3/16" = 4.7625 mm. A 5 mm bolt may have to be forced through slightly. Or get a 3/16" bolt.) Put a 3 mm right angle bend on one end of the wire. Slot the bend into the two aligned registration notches, bend the free end all the way around the bolt and cut it off where it meets itself. Screw on the nut. Angle the spring outwards about 20 degrees and fit the spring's end tab into the short handle's slider slot. Tighten down the nut. Small drop of oil in the pivot area. Et voila - spring-loaded pocket scissors! They cut well and self-sharpen somewhat with use. Fit the large handle into the crook of your index finger, bolt head held by the finger's second joint, operate with the thumb. An Allen socket bolt, with its deeper head, is an easier grip for the finger. A stainless steel Allen bolt looks very cool. The spring action and width of opening are set by the angle of the spring when the nut is tightened down. For the pocket, release the spring, close the blades and slide a 3 cm length of 10 mm silicone rubber tubing over them for safety. The short blade's handle can be made more thumb-friendly by softening a length of 4 mm plastic tubing with a heat gun and pushing it over the handle. Trim as needed. Where do you get 4 mm plastic tubing? Dismantle any empty domestic cleaner pump spray bottle and there's a length of 4 mm tubing connecting the pump head to the bottom of the bottle. As always, the HH shopping experience: quick & painless!
