A folding shovel can be an indispensable tool in todays constantly changing environment.
We know one thing, when you need to move sand, dirt or snow you wish you had that shovel close at hand. SOG's all steel construction entrenching tool uses a tempered steel blade with teeth cut into it for cutting. The triangular handle
is strong and fits the hand well. Folded, it takes up about the same space as a stack of paper plates.

For the money this is well made and looks like it will take some abuse . Very compact too .
This bares a striking resemblance to the British Army entrenching tool, however this is lighter and you'd struggle to get an army version second hand at this price. (Good ones eBay at £25-30) I purchased this to leave in my car just in case (snow etc...) and the lighter weight while still feeling pretty sturdy is exactly what I wanted. I have tested it with some light tasks and it did exactly what it needed to. In summary if your want hard use get an MOD one. For anything else this is more convenient and cheaper.
rreally amazing
Two weeks camping whilst hiking round N wales and this served us well, for all general odds and sods of wild camp life, great design packs down small and really does the job great for such a small item. Remember its not a house hold spade / shovel it has limits but anyone with commoen sense can see that. Cheers for kitting us both out HH and great to see you down there.
Long term review... only suitable for the lghtest of tasks. Plant beds, playpit sandbox. Not robust enough for hard ground
Bought this shovel to help me dig out and around the roots of a few large bushes and hedges, and it's doing exactly as I required. I had originally tried a regular sized shovel and brute force, but I was damaging the root structure badly so realized I needed a bit more finesse. This SOG folding shovel was the answer. On my knees, I can now easily clear the soil without destroying the root structure, at least the parts I want or need to save! whilst the rest still gets cut through with a combination of this shovel plus the excellent value Tramontina machete. The pickaxe spike isn't really heavy duty, but it has come in very handy for the tighter tasks and I've not bent it at all in use; just don't try breaking rocks with it! Overall, very pleased with the SOG Shovel, it does everything I need it to in the garden with the huge bonus that it folds up quite compactly so will be a boon to have when away wild camping. Delivery service from Heinnie is unquestionably top rate so I knew I'd have it in time for the weekend.
I can't understand people who try to compare this to a garden spade or shovel! Grow up and accept it's not for digging out foundations and what not! I have had mine a while and in camp it does all it's supposed to do admirably.
I've been using mine to help dig out a shed base. While it's not ideal for shovelling out or moving large amounts of soil at a time it excels at creating/cutting flat ground/surfaces because of its flat surface and sharp spade edge. It's hit many a pebble in its path which hasn't dented it so far, however in tough compacted soil the head does have a tendency to flex instead of move the mass as the steel is relatively thin compared to standard garden tools. It does return to its normal shape when withdrawn but means that it's not as capable in this regard as a standard garden spade. Its folding feature is great though and it's extremely portable.
