Micarta is many peoples favourite handle material. It is weather resistant, extremely strong and gives a great feel and look. Marry that with many peoples favourite knife producer and you have a sure fire winner. The Rough Rider Sowbelly Classic Micarta has three blades to choose from; a clip point, a spey and a sheepsfoot all of which are under three inches and non-locking making it a UK friendly carry knife. As ever with Rough Rider the quality is exceptional considering the price.

My worst RR so far yet still pretty decent

Posted by Jan on 1st Aug 2020

Well, as the title says. Gaps in the backspring, proud pins ruining the smoothness of the micarta. Also a minor design flop - the swedges on the blades make the knife uncomfortable to hold.
The micarta looks georgeous tho. Still a nice piece for the price.

    Great

Absolutely great knife at this price point. Micarta is good looking and feels good. Only gripe is that the main blade is a nail breaker when you open it ,however I'm sure this will ease with use.

    Brilliant knife

Posted by Tom on 8th May 2020

Great fit and finish. I like the handle material. The 3 blades are really useful for all sorts of jobs. I like to use the sheepfoot for opening bales of hay and haylage and straw and also heavier tasks which it handles really well. The long clip blade is great for cutting string and plastic etc.

Rough rider steel takes a great edge. I've had plenty of knives and they take a lot of use on the farm. I've never had any hold up as well as rough rider, and these knives are really easy to resharpen. Other knives I've had always take more sharpening.

    Lovely

I bought one of these for a friend's 50th birthday and liked it so much I bought one for myself! A lovely little knife, it has useful blades (eg the sheep's foot for cutting cords). They're all sharp out of the box and the knife itself has a solid weight and tactile feel. The delivery from HH, even under current restrictions, was exceptionally quick so, thanks to all for that. This is not a replacement knife for my various Swiss army and Leatherman knives; they remain useful and close at hand. This is just more traditional and it feels as if it will last for many years. Very happy with it.

    Great value

Posted by Simon on 10th Apr 2020

Nice little knife this, all blades have half stops, fit and finish is good, no noticeable gaps anywhere. Only gripe is that the pull on the main blade is easily an 8-9, proper nail breaker. Otherwise, great value.

    Impressive little knife.

Posted by Mac on 25th Mar 2020

Great little knife. Very well put together. Tiniest of gaps in between backsprings but the rest is amazing quality. Very sharp. And after 5 minutes of stropping it is scary sharp. Which brings me to my only concern. Backspring strength is high. And the blades are so small and thin that when opening it up there's not enough to get a firm purchase on that it can slip and could easily draw blood. It has a good half stop on all blades which gives a little bit of reassurance when closing. Definitely happy with it though. Need to see how well it holds up once it's getting used

    Postscript

Posted by David S on 21st Mar 2020

Further to my earlier review, I've now managed to buy another example of this knife from a different supplier with none of the defects I'd found in the one I returned for refund.

I think mine comes from a different (later?) production run, because the black liners don't go all round the bolsters (as they do in the photos here).

Make no mistake, this is an excellent knife at a knockdown price.

    Disappointed (again)

Posted by David S on 26th Feb 2020

My example came with a gap in the backspring and adjacent cover.

I returned it and HH refunded me immediately, having confirmed they had no others in stock which were not similarly defective. This happened last time I ordered a RR from HH too. It's a pity, because this would otherwise be an excellent knife, and I've had other RRs from HH which have been fine, which is why I decided to give them another chance. Sadly, they blew it.

I realise this is an inexpensive knife, but I'm unwilling to accept faulty fit/finish at any price level. Online retailers in the UK should realise that their customers have little choice but to buy unseen, and should therefore exercise particular vigilance in inspecting every purchase before dispatch. Either they can't be bothered to do this, or they simply 'try it on' hoping that punters will put up with substandard quality.

Simply not good enough HH, I'm getting increasingly fed up with this kind of customer experience.

    Spectacular

Posted by Don on 24th Dec 2019

Wow what a knife! Arrived really quickly , top service from H.H. When I unboxed it I was amazed at the quality, it was razor sharp and worked beautifully BUT the best part was its looks and feel. The photos do not do justice to the knife, honestly in my opinion it looks spectacular!
