    Pleasantly Surprised

Posted by Thomas Drew on 5th Jun 2025

Was in the market for a marlinspike, I decided I liked this one's looks over the bone handled one so took a punt. At £25 I thought it would be worth the risk, and as my partner pointed out - if it wasn't any good Heinnie wouldn't sell it. Of course she was right, it's a great knife! A decent sized blade and feels good in the hand. The blade came sharp enough, is centred okay and has a half stop (which I prefer). The blade's grind isn't the most equal but it's fine enough and I can sort it out if I'm that bothered. There is a bump on the ricasso to stop blade rap (instead of a stop pin) which is nice. If I was being picky I'd prefer a little more pressure holding the blade out, but it's fine in use. Fit and finish is okay. Is it amazing? No, there are bits that need polishing out and there are the odd tiny gap but it cost £25 so we can't complain - I've handled worse knives with higher price tags. The marlinspike looks good and locks into place well (which is needed for a marlinspike in my experience, non-locking ones just close up on you when you try and use them with rope work). There have been queries about legality - the blade is clearly fine, the marlinspike maybe problematic. The fact it locks isn't a problem as that isn't referenced in the law (only when referencing blades) but it is pointed... Is it sharply pointed, as stated in the legislation? Well it's not sharp but it is pointed so a copper could take exception and take it but with it's classic aesthetics etc I'd doubt it.. Also it's £25 so not a huge loss. I'll be carrying it with me when I'm doing rope work so that would be an good reason cited in the legislation. All in all, for the money and a work knife I'm happy with this knife. Delivery was fast and efficient as always, well done Team HH!

Pleasantly surprised how good this knife is can't think of any ways to improve it to be honest. Marlin spike is fantastic. It's my EDC now. Very solid!

ROUGH RIDER HIGHLAND MARLIN FOLDING KNIFE

Posted by Steve Saunders on 26th Apr 2023

Nicely finished 440 blade strong spike good knife, I have a few of this type of knife locking spike but not blade, for the price this is a good choice, but only criticism and this is not the only make of this type to suffer it is the blade spring could do with a bit more force to hold the blade open .not really a general EDC as the spike locks which my be a problem for the police, if you're interested in sailing , ropes etc and need a good marlin spike I would recommend this knife, looks good strong and durable for the price is great value,
