Good but other handle options might be better

Posted by Kevin Colwill on 9th Jul 2019

On the plus side the RR Hawkbill very well made and extremely well finished for a knife under £14. I'm sure it'll be up to all the pruning/gardening work I bought it for. The slight minus is the handle scales. Yellow synthetic scales are common on some much more expensive American pocket knives and I opted for that rather than one of the versions with natural bone handle scales. The yellow plastic is not rounded off leaving it uncomfortable in the hand. Carefully looking at the photos you can see this and photos show rounded off handle scales on the bone handled versions. Sadly I didn't spot this before buying. Still a useful and good looking garden/general purpose knife but spending the extra few quid on natural handle scales would be worth thinking about.

    Whats not to like

Posted by Col on 24th Jul 2015

This is my 10th RR and all have been of excellent quality , just a slight niggle with this Hawkbill there's a tiny indent on the back of the blade but its no deal breaker at this price . The blade sits dead centre with no play in any direction and has a good open/close action with a solid halfway stop , came paper cutting sharp ( the standard test for sharpness ) and the handle scales are well finished . If you're looking for a cheap pocket knife you won't go far wrong with a RR . Once again HEINNIE'S service was first class , thanks : )

    Well worth the money

I've a few RR knives and this is probably the one I like the best. The fit, finish and walk and talk is very good. It takes a good edge too. I bought some for friends and the quality seems pretty consistant. I'd rate it above the level of the pruners you see in garden centres. Well worth the money I'd say.
