Description

The Rough Rider Cotton Sampler Stag.

Historically the cotton sampler knife was used by cotton buyers to judge the quality of cotton by rolling small pieces of material on the section before the blade. Still used in some areas of the States, Rough Rider produced this item as a collectors piece with historical significance.

The blade is 440 stainless steel whilst the handle is brown stag bone with nickle silver bolsters. The blade is non-locking and is under 7.6cm long making it a UK friendly carry knife.

    Brown stag Bone Cotton Sampler

Posted by Mike King on 8th Mar 2026

Ive had this unusual blade shaped model for over two years now but as I carry it as my EDC quite often I thought it was worthy of a review . When I first saw this one advertised through HHs it didnt really have any appeal to me and so passed over it a few times . After starting my Rough Ryder collection I decided to pull the trigger just for the unusual shape and glad I did so ! First of all as a collector I like to get a knife with all the right ticks , so the overall fit and finish , central blade allignment , good walk and talk with zero blade movement , great transitions between scales and bolster and hardly any gapping ticked all the right boxes. On this model the brown stag bone scales were absolutely gorgeous and the pictures on Heinnies site do not do this knife justice ! The handle itself is longer and slightly curved and with the stag bone makes for a good grip . It is finished off with brass liners giving it that traditional quality look . Now the blade itself which I would probably describe as a broad scalpel style which had its original intended use for cotton mills / bale workers to test the strength and quality of the cotton strands . Now that apart this particular shaped blade makes for a great and varied use EDC , cutting , slicing . food prep and could even be utilised as a craft workers knife / model making ! Whatever it makes a nice collectors piece and is in fact a sturdy knife overall .

    Good value

Forgivable flaws (considering price) in fit & finish that included bodged etching but an interesting pattern, pretty unique, totally inoffensive -- for now, yet still useful blade. Bigger than expected. Handle longer than standard swiss army but with short 2.5" blade = good UK legal for bigger paws. Test of sharpening skills -- factory edge not on par with previous Rough Riders but I can see why with such steep belly. Great sound effects for those who appreciate slip joints. Still more of a novelty if I'm honest but cool overall. 4 stars for no disappointment but not a 5 star knife
