The Rough Rider Coal Mine Work Knife is what can only be described as a brilliant budget friendly locking knife which holds up really well under use.

This knife boasts a decent 440A stainless steel drop point blade, which is held securely in place with a strong liner lock mechanism (it also has a very strong back spring which gives added peace of mind). The black bone handle is nicely textured and the brass pins and liners give the knife a real aesthetic appeal.

If you are after a strong work knife for not a lot of money, you are definitely looking at the right knife.

    Rough Rider Coal miner

Posted by AIDAN SIDDLE on 23rd May 2024

Reasonable fit, finish and value for money at this price (£23). Feels substantial in hand, hefty yet nicely balanced. Nylon bushes with no stops, good solid liner locking. Razor sharp out of the box. Trusted seller: having purchased many items, I can recommended Heinnie H for excellent service.

    Coal Miner Work Knife

A good sturdy, solid feeling knife that's an absolute bargain at the price. It has a nice heft to it which I like... no good if you want a lightweight knife.

    Super Knife

Posted by Andy F on 16th Nov 2020

Razor sharp out of the box and super service from HH. No sheath or belt clip or it would have 6 stars as this is a great knife. Bought as a light purpose camp knife so no issues with the steel and it does its job brilliantly. I have prepared dinner with it and it cuts through steak like it was butter. It looks great and feels sturdy and comfortable with a rteally nice grip. Opens and closes with ease with no play whatsoever. Highly recommended.

    Slightly Damaged

Posted by Obsidian on 4th Sep 2020

I was disappointed that I received the knife a little bent; moreover, the shield on it must have not been glued properly, or the glue wore out, as I found it detached from the knife. However, the shield was an easy fix (huzzah for superglue). On the other hand, I don't imagine that the bend in the blade is fixable at all, which is a big disappointment as the rest of the knife is pretty topnotch: blade is razor-sharp and is finished to a mirror polish; the scales and the brass liners/lock are gorgeous; and whilst the knife is a little difficult to open, it locks up pretty solid. Thankfully, the bend isn't severe, so it's still pretty usable. Had the blade not been bent, I would have given this bad boy a full five stars.

    first impression

As a land owner and woodworker I always need a knife, worn out lost and broken many knives. Looked at various options which is the great thing about this company website, you browse through just about every knife available on the market, my local farm store have a couple of knives and that's it. Decided that I need a locking knife to work with, it needs at least a 3" blade which gives it a decent size handle. it cant be too expensive, it is not for show it just has to good steel for sharpening and work.. immediately out of the box it is razor sharp, a little stiff to open with cold hands at first but I'm sure it will work in, the lock seams reasonably secure and the handle is sufficient for my big hands. I t does say china on the blade, it appears to be a quality knife and looks good too. time will tell but for under £20 if I get a couple of years out of it I will buy another. Excellent service from Heinnie!

    A dambed nice work knife

Posted by Alan B on 7th Jul 2016

A really well made knife for the money. Rough Rider seem to be be very good at making large, sturdy work knives and this one is no exception. I don't think there will be any danger of the blade working loose or the knife dropping to bits. A very sure locking mechanism too The knife is hefty and blade large: suitable for hacking a variety of tough materials. Also good as a portable culinary knife. Well done RR for quality at a budget price and HH for service.

    shock and awe

I just went to write an Opinel review, someone said it was like a Mora...! No, I have them in front of me! The Coalminer is very close to the Mora HD it's the first knife that's shaved my legs, out the box! Amazing quality and performance, far outperforms it's cost. imho
