The Rough Rider Backwoods Hawkbill from the Backwoods Bushcrafter series is a supremely useable folding pocket knife. The hawkbill pruning blade is equally at home in the garden or garage, shed or workshop, with the curve of the blade being great at pull-cuts, on rope or sheet material.

This model from Rough Rider is, like so many of their pieces, extremely well priced, and a delight to hold in the hand. When folded, this knife is pleasingly wide, filling the palm of your hand. The deep, black-coated 440A blade is easily grasped to open, and is provided with a nail-nick, just behind the false curved top edge.

The bone scales are copper-pinned to the body of the knife, with shiny copper coloured bolsters setting the knife off to great effect.

As an everyday user, there's a place in your life for this little beauty.

    Worth the money...I guess

Posted by Damian B on 20th Oct 2020

Now, I admit I've been spoiled by my first Rough Rider (Ryder) experience with the cinnamon stag Damascus canoe (which is a great knife, so far - check it out). So the bar for Rough Riders was set pretty high. I know, I know, they're budget knives. I know that. Honest. And this one wins lots of points. I love the aesthetic, it's a great size, and it's very comfortable. I'm sure it will do a lot of good work. But alas, the negatives slightly outweigh the positives for me ... for now: The backspring is pretty weak, the halfstop isn't very strong, there's no reassuring snap at any point that there (mostly) was with the canoe, and overall the action feels oddly both quite soft and also a bit sticky throughout. The fit & finish are reasonable, though the ridges in the handle scales - while functional and aesthetic - mean the pins aren't all flush with the scales and can be a bit scratchy. Also, and importantly, the blade wasn't very sharp out of the box. It may be my poor sharpening ability, but I haven't yet managed to get a good edge on it. It is, however, a testament to the other positives the knife offers that I will persevere in this regard.
