Benchmade Redoubt

The Benchmade Redoubt occupies a deliberate middle ground in the brand's folder lineup. Introduced in 2022 as part of the Black Class tactical range, this knife bridges the gap between lighter designs and heavy-duty workhorses. The model 430 takes its name from military fortifications, temporary structures built for defence when permanent installations aren't feasible.

What sets the Redoubt apart is its considered use of materials. The 9cm drop point blade uses CPM D2 steel, a powder metallurgy version of the classic tool steel. Benchmade heat treats this to 60 62 HRC, higher than most folders, delivering exceptional edge retention without brittleness. The black Cerakote coating provides corrosion protection since D2 isn't fully stainless. Blade thickness sits at 3.175mm, substantial enough for hard use but thin enough for good cutting performance. Available in both plain edge and partially serrated configurations.

The Grivory handle construction keeps weight down to 104.9g but doesn't sacrifice rigidity. Steel liners run only as far as needed to support the pivot and AXIS lock, reducing unnecessary mass. The grey handle features a textured forest green grip panel that provides excellent purchase in wet conditions or when wearing gloves. This Overlander Grey and Forest Green colour scheme marks a departure from typical all-black tactical aesthetics. At 12.1cm closed, the Redoubt offers a comfortable four-finger grip without excessive bulk.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What makes CPM D2 steel different in the Benchmade Redoubt?
+
The CPM D2 steel used in the Benchmade Redoubt is a powder metallurgy version of traditional D2 tool steel. Benchmade heat treats this to 60 62 HRC, which is notably harder than most production folders. This higher hardness delivers exceptional edge retention without the brittleness that would occur in lesser steels. CPM D2 contains 11.5-12% chromium, providing better corrosion resistance than carbon tool steels but not quite reaching full stainless status. The black Cerakote coating compensates for this, protecting the blade from rust. You get impressive toughness and edge holding in a steel that's easier to sharpen than many super steels.
Are there different blade options available for the Redoubt?
+
The Benchmade Redoubt is available in two blade configurations: plain edge and partially serrated. Both feature the same 9cm drop point profile in CPM D2 steel with black Cerakote finish. The plain edge version suits general utility and food prep tasks, providing clean cuts and easy maintenance. The partially serrated option adds capability for cutting rope, webbing or fibrous materials that benefit from a serrated edge. There's also a model 431 variant featuring a tanto blade profile for those preferring that geometry. All versions use the same Grivory handle construction and AXIS lock mechanism.
How does the Redoubt compare to the Benchmade Griptilian?
+
The Benchmade Redoubt shares design DNA with the Griptilian range but features several key differences. Both use Grivory handles and the AXIS lock mechanism, but the Redoubt employs CPM D2 steel rather than the Griptilian's S30V or other options. The Redoubt's handle has a distinctive two-tone grey and green colour scheme. Internal liners are shorter in the Redoubt, reducing weight without losing strength. The blade profile differs slightly, with the Redoubt featuring a more pronounced drop point. The Redoubt sits at a similar price point to mid-range Griptilian configurations, positioning it as a modern alternative rather than a replacement.
