Benchmade Griptilian
Benchmade Griptilian
The Benchmade Griptilian is one of the most successful folding knife designs of the 21st century. Introduced in 2001 and designed by Mel Pardue, the model 551 established new standards for what a folding knife could be. It filled the familiar ‘big folder’ niche but did so in a refreshing way that combined lightweight synthetic materials with robust steel liners and the innovative AXIS lock mechanism. More than two decades later, the Griptilian remains one of Benchmade's best-selling knives and a benchmark against which other production folders are measured.
When you first pick up a Grip, the most common reaction is surprise at how light it feels. At 108.3-110g for the full-size model, it weighs roughly half what traditional brass and wood folders do. Benchmade achieves this through Grivory handles backed by stainless steel liners, creating a knife that's light without compromising strength. The 8.8cm modified drop point blade uses S30V steel in current production models, though early versions featured 440C or 154CM. The sabre grind provides excellent versatility.
Available configurations span an impressive range. The full-size 551 features the drop point blade, the 550 offers a sheepsfoot profile, and the 553 provides a tanto option. Each comes in Mini versions (models 555, 556 and 557 respectively) that measure approximately 15% smaller. Blade options include plain edge, partially serrated and various finishes. Handle colours have included black, green, blue, orange, pink, sand and even RealTree camouflage over the years. Premium versions feature G10 handles and upgraded steels like 20CV or M4.
