    Old Hickory Hunting Knife

Posted by Phil Greenhill on 13th Oct 2022

Nice sheath. This was the bluntest knife I've ever received and it took quite some time to profile and get sharp., the angles and width of the bevel were inconsistent along the blade length. I have 2 other Old Hickorys and they arrived sharp so this may well have just been one that slipped through their QC

    Old Hickory hunting knife

I got this because of the traditional design which reminds me of Green River style knives or similar. It's massive compared with the Bird & Trout at the same price, so is better value. The blade is stamped from thin stock. There is a space on the obverse side to engrave your initials, etc. I etched '2020' which is when I got it. It's decent for £30 & is similar to several of the Sheffield made knives on this site without the finesse of a tapered, polished grind. Fit & finish is pretty average & the sheath is dry & stiff. It sharpens up nicely but I'm not really sure what it's supposed to be for - it seems too thin for a hunting knife of this size & there's no guard. It could replace a mid-sized Chef's knife but would be high maintenance due to the rust prone steel. It takes a good edge but it's thin for hard use & too big for whittling. It's worth the money but is it good value?

So it's not Mora / Hultafors cheap, had mine 2 or 3 years.maybe longer. The finish was not vey good, to begin with. I just had to work on it. You do get leather sheath, again not the best, but it serviceable. Had to spend a bit of time polishing out the serrated blade surface, Its a me thing, I'm just not a fan.of this practice. Sanded away all the imperfections from the hardwood boulsters and addressed the projecting tang. Put a course edge on the blade honing and have been using to butcher lamb carcass. Cut 4 up in succession with occasional touch up, its ightweight and easy to control, filleting, dicing, jointing, cutting and trimming. A very capable knife, easy to handle and maintain. Growing on me.

    Old Hickory Hunting Knife

I bought this to use as a camp kitchen knife replacing a chef's knife, a small cleaver and a paring knife and apart from a bit more sharpening than I expected it's been excellent.

Still in the sheath I put it in my kitchen drawer, sliced tomatoes and then took it up the allotment and used it there!

Reveiw of Old hickory 5.5inch hunting knife with leather OKC stamped sheath..

    Posted by Mr.Cooper on 12th Oct 2020

At this price its worth getting, its a nicely made knife with leather sheath, which is also suprisingly good. Would reccomend you false patina the blade to aid against corrosion as is high carbon steel, comes sharp out the box but can be added too,it holds an edge well. A great bushcraft knife or great camp knife especially meat and food prep. Would buy again, worth keeping in a pack and at this price competes with mora knifes well.Really like old school feel and look and has been round years and modified from kitchen knives to bushcraft knife because is a good knife. I recommend this knife and nice leather sheath but not quite 5 stars more 4 and half, this can still be moded a bit to aid function, like patina which you can do with vinegar, tom sauce and lemon, makes a prettier corrosion resistant blade. Buy one for bushcraft, camp kitchen, cooking, camping you wont regret it.
