This is a tiny version of a simple Japanese design, a simple folder with a folded metal handle, non-locking blade and a simple extended tang to open it. The Higonokami style is a friction folder, with no lock, held open by the user’s hand acting on the tang.

To those who would criticise, it’s a basic design with a fiddly, small, uncomfortable metal handle – which is true, but one needs to look beyond the first impressions, and examine the knife for the work of art that it is.

Others will appreciate the simplicity of the sparse, Nagao design – there’s nothing on this knife that’s surplus to requirements. The handle is of folded brass. The blade pivots around a rivet, spaced with a pair of plain brass washers.

The blade is from Japanese SK steel, a good, straightforward material for blademaking. The knife is equipped with a lanyard attached to the tang, complete with small bell, to add a jingle to your keychain.

The knifemaker’s ability is evident in this pure and simple design. This version has a satin stainless steel handle with a satin finish tanto blade.

    Nice little thing

    Posted by G on 3rd Oct 2015

A tiny version of one of the oldest unchanged knife designs in the world. Evidence of it being hand made is clear from looking closely at the blade. Some might say that the not a good thing but I am reminded of a song lyric that goes: "True perfection has to be imperfect". This knife isn't of course, but do not let the "rustic" look of the blade put you off. Speaking of the blade, it is actually really sharp. The knife appears to be made from only three parts: the blade, the solid brass handle and the rivet holding it all together. Of course, the size makes it somewhat impractical, but I suppose it would make a nice letter opener. I bought this version, with the bell, because why not? It is a nice little knife that I will enjoy having as part of my collection and will probably look to buy the full size version in the future.
