I followed earlier reviewer Adam's brilliant idea. The metal case is a lovely item, but the plastic compass installed is cheap and doesn't do the case justice. By instead fitting the Francis Barker NATO button compass you get a great result. For me the NATO compass is now much more useable being in a solid case with the option to fit a lanyard. The attached D-ring does allow the compass to sit flat on a table, so maybe that is an improvement from an earlier comment. Super service from HH, with thanks.

First, let’s get this out of the way. The actual compass inside the brass casing is terrible and really cheap. It’s made of plastic and really is as bad a compass as I’m making out. But that’s not why you are getting this. The casing is beautifully machined, and you’re buying this to remove the cheap plastic compass inside it and to replace it with a high quality NATO survival button compass. The original compass dimensions are about 16.9mm x 6mm. The NATO button compass dimensions are exactly 15x5mm. It’s a bit smaller, and there are many ways to professionally install it. My method was to install a sapphire antireflective watch glass in the front (to stop the NATO compass from falling out), the dimensions were 17x1mm. I then popped in the NATO compass, putting two o-rings on the outside to give it a snug fit. The back of the brass casing can be unscrewed and reinstalled using a standard adjustable watch case remover. You also need to get rid of the D-ring on the brass casing. I don’t believe it’s actually made of brass, and looks and feels cheap. Replace it with a real brass slip ring, or you can attach it directly to your keyring. With these modifications, the compass is now very functional and really looks the business.

I bought one of these to see if it was any better than the brass Marbles compass. It isn't. I bought the titanium version. It is light, feels cheaply made, and doesn't work. First of all it's impossible for it to lie flat as the D ring is too big and gets in the way. As if that wasn't bad enough, however still you hold it, the needle jumps all over the place and won't give any consistent reading. Don't bother with this compass, or you will wish that you hadn't. It's complete rubbish.

A quality bit of kit. I've bought three of these now, and gifted two of them. We all need a moral compass ;)

I ordered the Ti cased version of the MecArmy compass. The compass I received would not reliably and consistently find magnetic north. The variation was often many degrees off. I tested the compass as thoroughly and fairly as I could devise: in the middle of a field, well away from magnetic interference (divested of any iron/steel items) and with the bead chain removed. The compass reading seemed to be affected by the position of the 'loop' and jump ring in relation to magnetic north. I returned the compass to HH and received a prompt refund, with their usual efficiency and courtesy.
