Finnish knives are refreshingly straightforward. No unnecessary bulk, no features looking for a purpose. They’re working tools, and that’s exactly why we like them.

 

Our Finnish knives include traditional Puukko knives, outdoor knives and carving blades made for controlled, practical cutting. If your idea of a good knife is something comfortable in the hand that you can actually put to work, Finland has been getting that right for a very long time.

 

Marttiini is one of the Finnish names we know particularly well at Heinnie. Based in Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, the company has been making knives since 1928 and still produces the sort of traditional outdoor designs that made Finnish knives so useful in the first place.

 

What Is a Finnish Puukko Knife?

The Puukko is the classic Finnish working knife. Generally compact, lightweight and comfortable to control, it’s particularly at home carving, preparing food around camp and handling the smaller cutting jobs that crop up outdoors.

 

Most Puukkos don't look particularly complicated. That's rather the point.

 

A traditional handle that fills the hand, a practical fixed blade and a Scandi grind make for a knife that's easy to control when working with wood and relatively straightforward to sharpen. You'll find modern variations in steels and handle materials, but the basic idea has proved remarkably difficult to improve upon.

 

Then there's the Leuku. Developed for the more demanding outdoor work associated with the Sámi people of northern Scandinavia, it's a larger knife designed for heavier chopping and camp tasks. If a Puukko is the knife for controlled work around camp, the Leuku is what we'd reach for when the job requires a bit more blade.

 

That distinction is worth understanding before choosing between them. Bigger isn't automatically better, particularly if most of your knife work involves carving and controlled cuts.
