Working out of Palaçoulo in Portugal the father and son team of Jose da Cruz create knives of outstanding quality and practicality. They are notable by the use of a heavyweight brass ring lock that secures the blade in the open position, no puny stainless or aluminium that loosens over time and becomes less effective.
The Jose da Cruz Merendeira Carbon features a compact, streamlined blade made from Carbon steel. It is extremely sharp out of the box and makes for a highly versatile and handy blade. It is available with either an Oak handle with a lined lanyard hole.

Add to BasketThe downside to this knife is that it is difficult (read almost impossible without wrenching your nail from your finger) to open with the nail nick. A set of pliers is what I've resorted to. Perhaps with some lubricant it may be possible to open it more easily. The positives once open is that blade is slicey and sharp and the Brass ring seems robust in comparison to a similar Opinel. Same its so stiff
It's nice and yes I prefer this to me opinels, it has a bit more character but a very similar knife. The wood is so much nicer than the beech on the opinels and there is choice. I always find the beech on the opinels a bit boring, I love cutting with opinels but they just don't go in my pocket because another knife gets picked up so my opinels only get used when my wife needs a knife, I always give her an opinel knowing a loss or break is no big deal.
