I don't enjoy sharpening stuff. I just want to make that clear before I start. As a pro-leatherworker I use scary sharp knives every day and spend hours keeping my blades in peak condition. I wasn't expecting too much from the Hultafor's grinding stone - hey, its just another stone right? Wrong, this is a great bit of kit and really easy to use. Although I winced a bit at the price, I'm so pleased I made the purchase. The stone even comes complete with a well designed oiled leather case that IMHO is the perfect holder. It is very well made and protects the stone from knocks whilst protecting the user from holes in their pocket - win win win eh?
This is a good stone for axes, gardening tools and machetes plus larger knives. The groove around the circumference makes it much safer to use than normal stones. It comes in a tough, thick leather pouch which is well designed. The two grades of grit are well chosen for both restoring really dull edges and just touching up a slightly blunted edge. I find using it with water works best, it can however be used with honing oil or indeed dry. Two or three passes are enough to restore the edge on my axes and keep them really sharp.
