The first Higonokami knives were made as early as 1896 in the Japanese town of Miki. After the last samurai were forbidden to carry swords in public, many blacksmiths started to make knives. Higo no Kami was then an honorary title for especially powerful samurai, and it quickly became the name for the knives produced there.

Since the production in the Japanese town of Miki the classic Higonokami has hardly changed.

The Higonokami Kinzoku Damascus is a lovely example of the knifemaker's art. The handle is made of one piece of folded metal, the knife is opened by a lever (Chikiri) on the back of the blade. By pressing the lever while holding the knife, the blade is kept open.

It’s a discreet knife, very pretty to look at, can be sharpened very easily to a razor sharp edge, lovely to use

    Higonokami Kinzoku Damascus review

Posted by Ravi on 3rd Jun 2021

Picked up this version after falling in love with Damascus blades. It is a simple design but beautiful and easy to use. Cutting open boxes with this is a breeze but watch your fingers, the sharpness on this will astound you. Overall a fantastic purchase and reasonably priced.

    Higonokami Kinzoku Damascus

This is my fourth Higonokami and as previous reviewers have said it doesn't come very sharp, I have spent quite a while with a strop, which was sufficient for the other 3, without getting to where I expect it to be. My mat can do it after lockdown as I'm pretty useless with water-stones. Aesthetically it is pleasing and the blade is centred, a first.

    A thing of beauty

Posted by Bird dog on 18th Aug 2020

The design hasn’t changed for a reason. This is a incredible tool for the price. I’ve barely put it down since it arrived, and after a little work the blade was like a razor. This is sublime, if you appreciate a tool made by someone who’s on top of their game you’re gonna love this. And your mates are gonna want one too.

    Bargain of the year

Posted by Sam on 1st Aug 2020

This fits beautifully in my hand, or my pocket and works well. It arrived a little blunt, but 5 minutes with a stone and it's brilliantly sharp. There seems to be a central steel core that has the edge, sandwiched between two bits of damascus steel which give it a beautiful look. The little thumb assisted opener, helps keep the knife secure when using it.
