    PXL Juma

Posted by Peter Wilson on 23rd Apr 2025

I have had this knife for four months and it has impressed me for a number of reasons. It came very sharp. It scored 75g on a Bess test out of the box and over the four months of use it has only needed stropping. The Elmax convex edge holds up very well to hard use. It has carved, feather- sticked, batoned and gralloched deer. The knife is very robustly made. Fit and finish are excellent. It feels solid in the hand. The balance point is where the Juma meets the steel bolster just back from the pivot. So there is quite some weight/heft to it when using it. It really benefits from a belt pouch. This is not a “pocket knife” that sits unnoticeable in any pocket in trousers. You can do this in a coat but a belt pouch is better. The clip is best removed. It is near the pivot and impacts on comfort. If you have the skills, grind off the clip and re-attach the back plate so you have a flush fit and no open screw holes to fill up with blood if used for hunting. This is the only niggle. Alternatively you can drop hot candle wax into the holes and rub the surplus off. This will preserve the threads. I have done this to mine and it is easy to heat up and remove. The grip is then incredibly comfortable. Very wide for a folder and enables long hours of use. I strop the edge with a diamond compound after each day of use and it comes back to a razor edge no problem. 0.5 micron works best/quickest. The tip needs careful attention. The convex design does not give a pin sharp tip but it is good enough for gralloching. In time I will reprofile this on my Worksharp Ken Onion belt grinder. If you like convex grinds getting one of these helps enormously on sharpening. The spine on the PXL is also superb for fire steel use. One of the few folders with a flat right angle spine from the factory. I use a broken-in DC3 stone to keep the right angle sharp. The knife throws sparks sufficient to light any tinder. Even scrubbed up inner tube. This is the only folder which really excels at “bushcraft” use straight from the box. It knocks spots off the Lars Falt and is open along the spine and a doddle to clean. Using a thick dental higiene brush is a good tip. Definitely recommend this knife.
