I don't like to trump my trumpet but I have 4 knives in Cowry-x and 4 knives in Cowry-y and I think the Cowry -x is way better than ZDP-189 because it's not about it's exclusiveness it' is about it's characteristics that totally blows ZDP-189s crown off its head chews it up and spits it back in its face and if could talk it would have the attitude to match too. I've had chipping in the past with ZDP-189 but cowry-x does not suffer the same issues as zdp 189 suffers from. I'd say the only steels capable of matching or may be better than Cowry-x is CTS Micromelt Maxamet, YXR7, CPM REX 121, K398, CPM 10V, CPM Cruwear, Tungsten Carbide - since Sandrin Knives is now in full production of Cemented Carbide knives. Cowry-y is no slouch either as that can go up to 63 HRC to 65 HRC . I'd say that the steels to watch now are Maxamet and Rex121 also K398. My favourite super steel is YXR7 as that is a matrix high speed steel so the amount of punishment that steel can take is simply unbelievable and astonishing! It's toughness is better than all those super steels I wrote above but followed closely by Cowry-x which was designed to be a super steel for knives. If your thinking of purchasing this I say go for it and I know you will not be disappointed in its performance.
I love my Idun cx. the more i use it, the better it looks . And that steel, oh man!. Now if i could just get Fallkniven to make me an F1 Pro using this steel lol
I recently decided to treat myself to this knife, as I have various knives in VG1, San Mai , Damascus VG10, and a small spyderco in ZDP-189, and thought I would get an example of Cowry-x. All I can say is wow, the photo does not do the knife justice, it is lethally sharp, goes through phone book paper like my japanese kitchen knives. The handle is superb, the blade is without doubt, the prettiest metal I have seen on a hunting knife, and the case is superb. The display case seems like a little like an afterthought, but that doesnt matter as the knife is on my belt. One word of warning, if you do buy this you will need a silver cloth, which costs nothing from any jewellers to polish the pommel and blade guard, as silver will tarnish., but this is already adding to the handle patina on the end washers, so Iits not an issue. Absolutely great service from Hennie as always.
