The Cold Steel Kobun is a lightweight knife that takes its name from the Japanese word “Kobun” which is sometimes used as an indicator of rank. Proven to be incredibly popular with the Military, where it’s prized for its light weight as much as its durability and cutting potential.

The Kobun features Cold Steels iconic reinforced “American Tanto” point, making it highly resistant to bending or breaking because it is reinforced by the full thickness of the blade’s spine (which runs almost to the very tip of the blade). Despite its thin profile, the Kobun’s deeply checkered Kray-Ex handle is designed to offer maximum grip and is contoured to resist turning or shifting in the hand.

More than just cool … Cold Steel Kobun

Posted by Stevo on 11th Mar 2025

Nice and sharp out of the box, blade length is a good size for general purpose use around the kitchen, and would likely do well for many outdoor activities (haven’t tried that yet). Very comfortable yet thin handle, and pleasantly grippy. This model is also comfortable to actually carry, and not too bulky. A real Tanto would have slightly convex sides sloping down to a sharp edge. This version has a hollow ground profile that works just fine, with the edge thickness being ideal. The Kydex sheath seems rugged enough, and offers different options for attachment, but has not yet seen lots of use. The retention seems perfectly adequate. Just make sure that the Kobun is properly seated, otherwise, as I found out, it can work loose. You can hear and actually feel the click when the Kobun is properly positioned in its sheath. The clip on the back of the sheath is sturdy enough, and holds firmly to fabric. I have not tried it on a belt so far, and not sure if I would want to, personally. My reason for choosing this model is because of its Far Eastern “type” of design and previous pleased experience with a few of the manufacturer’s other products. The only other item with a remotely similar heritage in my collection is an excellent if inexpensively made higonikami, with a formed steel handle, and efficient, easily maintained carbon steel blade, with the typical higo tab at the base of the blade which allows it to be readily operated with either hand. A budget conscious friction folder with an oriental vibe. The steel is superb, the edge is eager and keen, and is genuinely Japanese. I like it very much. The Cold Steel Kobun is essentially an American interpretation of a classic Tanto, although I would not presume to be anything like an expert on the rich history and design subtleties of the true Tanto form. The tip of the Kobun is more like a skewed chisel, with that severe angle designed to excel at piercing without compromising or damaging the tip, as would be the case with a fine slender or thin tip, as with an Opinel (bless ‘em). And if I’m brutally honest, the grinding on the cutting edge of the very tip of my Kobun is uneven. About half as much on the left as on the right, viewed from the spine. A little effort on a water stone would equalise the cutting edge of the tip. But, the tip is serviceably sharp as is. The rest of the edge is beautifully keen, and well formed. The balance of this model is very good. Right at the beginning of the small guard. The lanyard hole is lined, and smooth internally. The AUS 8A blade material cleans up easily, and is a good all around option, based on previous experience with a well used and much appreciated Kabar Dozier Hunter thumb notch folder also in AUS 8A, and also made in Taiwan. While adding this Kobun to the collection is a bit of a departure from the usual more traditional items, the slightly unusual design and strong hints of exotic oriental lineage make for an interesting choice. Many thanks!

    Cold Steel Kobun

Posted by Derek W. on 14th Dec 2024

I've wanted one of these for a long while and took the plunge when they were on the Black Friday deal. Although they were out of stock, HH got new stock in fairly quickly. Once ordered, mine arrived with Heinnie's usual quick delivery time and, no surprises, it is precisely as shown and described. The sheath is solid with a sprung, reversible, 'pocket' clip which could be easily removed if another carry option were chosen. Withdrawing the knife presents no problems, due to the grippy nature of the handle material which gives good purchase. Sharpness is fine and, in my opinion, this is a good, functional blade. It's my first Cold Steel purchase, but may not be my last.
