I have had a case large stockman knife for many years ,gifted to me by a friend after a visit to the US Time passed and I decided to buy a replacement as I've sent the other back to case for a refurb etc The model i chose was the yellow delrin type smooth scaled (as near to the old model as I could get ) This model also had the cv carbon steel that I wanted too Service was fast from HH as usual and when I got the knife it was in a small box rapped on tissue paper as was my original I believe? First impressions of the knife were good , although there was a gap on the liner near the case ledgend that was annoying at first there was also very rough finish to the top of the blade tangs when looking into the knife blades closed With regard to the blades they were sharpish ,with a little wiggle side to side on the large blade again disappointing as my old model never did ,infact it was better than this one even after thirty years use ! As for the case quality control well I think they should have found the said liner issue and the blade was obvious too but I did get it to use so we will see how it holds up ? I have not been overly impressed with USA knives of late as I also got a Buck stockman that was poor in comparison to my old one ! I have sinse really appreciated the quality and value of the good old Victorinox swiss army knives, something Case and Buck should I believe take a good look at !!! I dought I would buy any more from the to makers in question, unless I could see them first ?
Having returned a Buck Stockman (US made; see my review) I eschewed the well-known far eastern option and decided to play safe and buy my first Case knife. It arrived today and I am justified in writing this so quickly because the quality was almost immediately evident. Out of the box it was a beautiful thing though the blade fouling made opening the Spey Blade awkward. I tested the edge of all three blades and found two of the three able to cut paper “ certainly not honed! On playing with it as one does a new knife I notice that the joints while smooth were caked with manufacturing debris so I gave a bath in WD40 and edged the blunt main blade. I then checked the play and found the main blade and the sheep's foot loose. On holding it to the light one could see between the frame and the springs. What to do? Well I decided not to return yet another knife and gentle peened the pin in question. It is now tight enough to resolve the wobble but the much vaunted walk and talk on the main blade is gone as is any possibility of warranty. I am not a collector, minor imperfections do not bother me; I am a guy who always carries and uses a slip joint folding knife and fancied what he hoped would be quality traditional item (my day to day is a Benchmade Proper: see my review). I cannot believe that I have just been unlucky with both these legendary US knife makers. My experience had taught me that much touted history is code for the past; the future lies elsewhere.
The Large Stockman came in a couple of days, excellent service from Heinnie Haynes. It had zero blade rub with all blades being well centred and no raised springs. Only minor side to side movement on the main clip blade, the other two blades have zero play. Came with a workable sharpness that improved rapidly with stropping on green then white compound. It's early days but if it's anything like my Case Mini Trapper I'm sure it's up to heavy duty work. Would recommend for a multi knife blade working knife.
Well, after my purchase of the case large blue trapper I fancied a large stockman and went for this yellow one instead of the usual bone . Well it's a good solid knife and built like a tank but I have issues! The CV blades are very sharp straight from the box but all three have blade rub! Now I know that this is a common problem with 3 blade stockman knives with only two back springs and not just on the case brand but I am a bit OCD when it comes to buying new kit so I am a little miffed that I've received a knife with this problem , hopefully though the rub marks will be less notIcable when the blades have developed a patina so I might just calm down lol! Great service front HH as usual though ordered standard free post Friday 3.30 pm, received 11.00am Saturday morning! Thanks again guys.
I got this to back up my small Stockman Three blades to choose from, different shapes for different roles. CV steel takes a great edge and slowly develops a patina ( if you like that sort of thing ) Easily polishes up to a shine if patinas aren't your thing Loses one star for slight proud spring on the clip blade in the open position Overall a great EDC
