The TROPEN is a light-weight sleeping bag with an extreme small packing size and minimum weight. Its remarkable feature is its vapour permeability which is very important for hot and humid tropical nights. The Shelltrans shell fits loosely over the inner structure and provides an extra layer of insulation with no cold seams. This construction ensures reserve warmth for cool, foggy nights. Comfort Limit +5C; Extreme -12C

In warmer weather the bottom part of the two-way zipper can be opened for ventilation. The hood is equipped with a mosquito net which can be folded out of the flap if required (it is in the front part of the bag and stored behind the flap with press studs.)The net can easily be attached around the hood by means of the small zipper. The zipper is non-snagging so that you can always get out quickly and easily.

All detailed images show the sand colour option which is no longer available. The Tropen is now only available in the Olive colour option.

Can be used in conjunction with the Defence 4 sleeping bag to create the MCSS Tropen Sleeping System

    Good lightweight sleeping bag

Posted by Ray on 14th Apr 2014

I went for the longer Tropen 200 , I'm 5'10" and 16 st so I like the extra room.. It's a long bag so I have extra room at the bottom for storage and is very roomy around the shoulders so If cold I would simply wear extra clothing. As per the previous reviews the zip is certainly non snagging and only covered by tape (but its a summer bag and over the spring /summer I don't see this as an issue). The only drawback to a good nights sleep that I found was the mossie net is only covered by poppers and as I snuggled the bag into my neck overnight I was pulling on the poppers ... so the net started to come free and started catching on my stubble (minor irritation). This is a keeper for 3 season use, with a bivi bag and extra clothing I'm interested to see how this performs over the winter. Will update in 12 months time...

    Poor Zip Design

Posted by John on 4th Dec 2012

The first thing to state is that the photo shown is the Defence 4, and NOT the ?Tropen? which has a side zip and not a centre zip. The zip is described as ?non snagging? and it certainly is, but at a cost; there is no conventional zip panel. An attempt has been made to cover the zip with two stiffened tapes, but they too easily part company and leave the zip exposed and this compromises the bag. The cold enters and the heat leaves through the zip. There is a hidden ?mosquito net?, but as it can sit directly on your face, it must be of suspect value. Malaria is too serious to depart from the WHO advice of a net (hung away from the skin) and pre-treated with Deet? or similar. The net might be useful to prevent the entry of insects and snakes if leaving your bag in suspect ground. There is no doubting the manufactured quality of the bag, but the leaky zip makes it only one star out of five for me.

    Terrific

Posted by Matt on 22nd May 2011

I have both the defence 4 and the Tropen 200 and they combine to make a great all season sleeping system. This bag is light but just as well made as it's bigger brother and the details such as the built in mosquito net really show that this is a well thought out military bag. I really rate this bag and I have a collection of down and synthetic bags for all conditions but these are now my go to sleeping bags.
