The newest member of the byrd “flock” is the distinctly different Gooney. Its defining feature is its unorthodox blade shape, which combines the functional elements of the sheepfoot, hawkbill, and the Reverse “S” patterns to yield a remarkably versatile cutting edge.

Designed by Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser, its blade is full-flat ground from 9Cr14MoV stainless steel for exceptional edge geometry and low-friction cutting performance. The blade is supported by a stout back lock mechanism housed within a linerless handle featuring grey, peel-ply-textured G-10 scales. To support a full range of carry preferences, the handle includes a four-position pocket clip that can be configured for tip-up or tip-down carry on either side of the body. A generously sized lanyard hole in the butt of the handle completes the package, allowing the easy attachment of fobs, lanyards, and safety lines.

    It's a fit Byrd

Posted by Blackhill on 6th Apr 2025

As a Spyderco fan I've never really looked at the Byrd line up too in depth .My favourite Spyderco is the Dodo but never owned one .When I saw the Gooney I had to have it .There's a lot to like about this .The blade on mine is perfectly centered .The lockup is solid with 0 blade play and opens smoothly .The G10 scales are smooth and grippy .I did some whittling with this and it out performed my Buck 110 both in edge holding and cutting ability .If Spyderco add this shape to Their main line up I'll snap one up in a heartbeat. For a working knife I can't fault it .
