The 3 Coil Crane is the smallest folding scalpel blade in the world.

Keeping a blade sharp can be a real challenge, and depending on the knife this can also require a lot of skill. This is why scalpel blades are so good for day-to-day use. Since a blunt knife is more dangerous than a sharp one, it is important that as soon as a blade shows signs of dullness, it is sharpened. With this set-up you can just swap the scalpel for a new one...simple!

The Crane is also a folding knife with no lock and a blade under three inches long so it is classed as legal to carry within the UK.

    Almost perfect

This is everything they say it is - beautifully designed and well manufactured. The pivot on mine became loose surprisingly quickly, but that's nothing that can't be fixed with a T6 Torx bit. At 5.5 cm when closed, the Crane is, by design, about as tiny as a scalpel can be (a blade is 4.2 cm). A key ring/lanyard hole would have compromised the design, since the handle would have to be just a little longer. You'll need a permanent home for your Crane (perhaps a small case with a few spare blades) or you WILL lose it. If you're planning on performing surgery after the zombie apocalypse, you'll need sterile blades and a good anaesthetic, so buy some vodka. You'll also need an Emergency War Surgery manual (available from Heinnie Haynes), suture, needles, and perhaps a spare Crane, in case you accidentally sew one into a patient and have to go back in to retrieve it. A magnet could come in handy. And more vodka, for post-op pain relief. And a machete, because, zombies. And more vodka, for the surgeon.

    Don't lose it

This is tiny. The spring tension is good both opened and closed; so it won't open up in your pocket. Machined well and comes with a spare No11 blade - which is the only size it takes. 5.5cm closed and slim. I reckon I'll lose it within a month!

Brilliant. Better than the picture. Good to handle and use. I will defiantly get another one.

    Very handy wee tool

I already had the Nitecore NTK05 for my keychain so knew what these were all about and they are excellent. The design of the 3 Crane makes it a little more difficult to open at first but you soon get used to the correct fingernail point. I mainly bought it because it had a steel frame and I was tired of raiding my keychain for the Nitecore and forgetting to put it back. The lower price point is due to the steel over titanium frame but titanium is totally unneccecarry for this style of tool and lends itself perfectly to attatching it to the 30cm steel rule magnetised to my wall next to my desk. The Nitecore is well worth it if you want a keychain vesion and has serverd me well for months on end so far and I fully expect this to as well. Just 2 different use cases. This one is for magnetic tool attachment or hobby box compartment storage. Just as surprisingly comfortable to use once extended for such a small tool. No. I have not tried to use it to cut down trees either. Star only lost due to no hole for keyring attachment. Quality is excelent. Best price point in range. Blade quality not in question with these just how they feel to use and the open/close action is a little stiffer than the Nitecore but that also means it adds to the sliplock friction though that on the Notecore is perfectlyadequate. I've tried the 2 side by side for a while carving up amzon boxes and a few leather offcuts and trhey both feel good in hand. It's going to come down to price point and whether you want a keyring carry or at home only tool.

    Great craft knife

Posted by Jeff on 4th Jun 2020

Really nice, folds well with a smooth action, fits in the hand well. Everything about this knife screams 'design'. No, it's not going to chop down trees, but if you want a letter opener/paper cutter that slips quite nicely in the pocket, look no further.
