Spyderco's Tri-Angle Sharpmaker is perhaps the ultimate knifesharpener. It includes two sets of high Alumina Ceramic stones: A pair of medium grit (dark) stones for aggressive sharpening, and a pair of fine stones (white) for professional grade finishing. There is also a set of brass safety rods to protect the user's hand during sharpening.

For sharpening plain edges, the flat sides of the stones are ideal. For serrated edges use the corners.

The stones fit into keyed holes and slots moulded into the polymer base and have a 40 degree and 30 degree sharpening angle for knives and a 12.5 degree scissor setting.

A groove running the length of the stone is for sharpening pointed objects like darts, awls and fishhooks.

All components pack into the base and the lid snaps shut making the 204 self contained and small enough to carry in your shirt pocket.

No lubrication is required during use for dry, mess-free sharpening.

Includes instruction DVD and book.

This set is listed by Spyderco as "204MF".

    First time I've successfully sharpened

Posted by Paul Bickerdyke on 2nd Jan 2024

I have tried a number of times with different products as well as manual sharpening with whetstones and I always end up making a knife worse than when I started. Since getting this I finally had success. Sharpened some folders and kitchen knives. They aren't 'shaving sharp' but before I started they were completely blunt and are now pretty good. I'm sure with practice I can do better.

    Sharpmaker

Excellent little device for keeping your pocket knifes, and some bigger knives sharp with a touch up, always clean between uses, also don't expect this kit to fix badly damaged or chipped blades, it's for maintenance really

    Keenly appreciated...

Wish I'd bought this sooner. Works well for tougher steels like 440C and D2. One word of advice: for fine points like fillet knives or small pocket knife blades with needle-like tips, ease off on the lateral pressure as you near the point of the blade. Otherwise it is easy to snap off half a millimetre or so of the tip of the blade. Oops! Once the basic technique is mastered this can be used for many sorts of edged tools. For cases where quite a bit of material needs to be removed, as with reprofiling a blade, a coarse stone and manual grinding is best. A Svord Peasant Mini arrived with uneven grinds. One side did not match the other. After a few minutes on the coarse stone, the Sharpmaker improved the edges tremendously. Stropping finished things off nicely. To get rid of the wire edge from sharpening, try cardboard smeared with buffing compound. It will quickly get rid of fine burrs and save your posh leather strop from premature disintegration. The same approach worked to restore the edge on my old Estwing hatchet, which had been chipped whilst removing a stump in the garden. A bit of work on a stone then a session with the Sharpmaker sorted things out. Overall this is a brilliant bit of kit. Very well recommended! Superb delivery from HH, as ever.

    Angle issues

Posted by Reddyredmond on 23rd Feb 2018

Having had this piece of kit for quite a while I now think that it's not all it's cracked up to be. It's taken me a while but, I think that using this is taking the factory grind off my knives. Now, I don't mind altering the grind as long as the knife is sharp, safe and doesn't get completely wrecked however, to alter a factory grind to a new angle simply through sharpening would surely take a long time? It seems to me that it would make more sense using a system which allows you to manage the angle on different knives at your own discretion, now if Spyderco were to introduce a new system with multiple angle possibilities; maybe that would work. For now though, back of the cupboard, sorry Spyderco.

    Great product

After much research for what suited my requirements i bought this, it has sharpened all of my knives without issue. Obviously more expensive sharpening systems out there depending on far down the knife lovers rabbit hole you are, but this will be more than sufficient for most people.

    Superb

I have had this for over a year now, it is such a great bit of kit. I have never been without a razor sharp knife since I bought it. So simple to use, I started having never really sharpened anything before, but on my first use got a knife hair popping. Since then I have sharpened knives (Freehand and in the stand), axes and a whole load of woodworking tool, all to razor sharpness. Great for beginner and experienced sharpeners alike, it will teach beginners to sharpen and will carry on performing in many tasks once you are experienced! Others have said that it can't easily re profile or aggressively sharpen a knife, which is true. But that's not what this is designed for, this is for putting a sharp edge on dull blades, not ones that have been abused and poorly maintained. For that you would be best putting it on a stone of some description then move on to this, I have done this and it works very well. (The Sharpmaker helped me loads with learning to freehand on a stone, so don't be afraid to give it a go, its not that difficult!) The price seems expensive, but for the endless sharp tools you will have it is worth it!! The best purchase I have ever made, buy now!!!!!! Service from HH excellent as always!

    This Really Works

Posted by Mike K on 23rd Aug 2016

I received a Sharpmaker for Christmas and after eight months I can say that it certainly works. A bit of practice is needed to get the strokes at a constant pressure and vertical, but even early attempts sharpened blunt knives to be able to slice copier paper. The more practice you have, the better the results, like everything in life. This is as safe and well designed knife sharpening kit as you will find. The instructions are clear and the DVD useful in demostrating exactly what is required to get the best results. The stones are easily cleaned when required. It is obvious why this kit has sold for decades. It works!

I should have bought one six months ago.

After getting mediocre results with a Lansky Turn Box for a few months,i finally broke down ,bit the bullet and got this sharpener.I used to think my knifes were sharp, but it turns out they were not.I spent an evening practicing with this kit,and now all my knife's are proper sharp .Everyone who can't really get on with freehand sharpening should think about one.Love mine. HH as usual delivered nearly before i bought it ....Many Thanks.

    Excellent bit of Kit

Posted by Ironman on 9th Nov 2015

22 people cant be wrong, so I was a bit wary, but works perfectly and can use it for my blades even done the missus cloth sissors. Get a spare rod and keep in your fishing kit brillinat for hooks. A good quality simple sharpener that just works.
