Gerber MP800 Legend 18

I've had this since 2007, So it's fair to say I've tested it. Pros: Feel of handles, no hotspots. Spring-loaded pliers very nimble, replaceable bits but not yet needed to do so. Grit saw - surprisingly good at metal. Scissors quite good too unless cutting leather or webbing, Knife multifunctional. One-handed opening good. Cons: File is so-so. Pliers not super-strong - can be sprained if twisting sideways. Glad his very small and in very ordinary metal. Overall it's the one I take fishing - perfect for that use.

I am sure that as they are Gerber and I have had the 800 Legend for many years that they will be perfect, however I have not received them as yet. JB

My review of nearly a decade ago is still on this site. I needed to cut an aluminium (not for climbing but still quite hefty) Carabina which had distorrted and was now stuck closed. The carburundum saw blade on my Legend made short work of this and was the only multo tool (of the many I won) that had the ability to do this easily. So I'll now give it an extra star!

It was these that stopped me from buying anything Gerber years back. The scissors didn't cut, the blade snapped, the file only worked about twice and lost its cutting ability, the replaceable cutter on the pliers broke in two and the little allen bolt sheared off while trying to cut the bottom off a brass zip, when the pliers snapped it went in the bin, it must have been made from compressed bean tins. Admittedly I had one of the very first ones, when they first came out and they may have improved them since, but as I said earlier I've never bought anything Gerber brand since and sadly it also put me off multi tools

I've carried one of these daily for about a decade, but recently lost it on a job. I've been and tried loads of different multi-tools, but haven't found anything near the simple perfection of this. Paired with a nice big Victorinox Champ SAK, I can take on nearly anything without falling back to the toolchest. (Honestly, the SAK scissors are better, and that DOES have a can opener) They compliment each other perfectly, since the Gerber locks up nicely and has the solid pliers, and the "disposable" inserts and carbide saw blade. It's been a month - time to bite the bullet and buy a new one!

I've had one of these for years. It's a very good tool and the (aluminium) handle has survived lots of use. My only slight gripe is the lack of a can opener! The changable/replaceable saw blade and wire cutter units are inspired!

Generally a good tool - the hacksaw blade saw is clever and there are some good features. I don't see why Gerber chose to make the pliers work like a Leatherman - why work their side of the street (and do it not as well...). And I once snapped the mechanism for the pliers so they aren't that strong...

Sturdy pliers, Nice assortment of fold out bits which lock in place, nice feel in the hand. Love 'em!

Good stong pliers, good idea with the changable wire snips blades, quality good set and nice to use.
