Since its original release in 1997, the Native has been a mainstay of the Spyderco product line and a flagship of their American-made stable of knives. The design has evolved steadily over the years, reaching its current state of the art in 2012 with the release of the Native 5. The latest addition to the Native lineage is the Native 5 Lightweight, which combines the Native 5’s engineering refinements with the weight-saving advantages of an injection-moulded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle.

Proudly manufactured in the Spyderco factory in Golden, Colorado, the Native 5 features a spear point blade made from premium CPM S30VN stainless steel. Its full-flat grind, distal taper, textured index-finger choil and thumb ramp, and understated swedge collectively offer a distinctive appearance and outstanding edge geometry and point utility. The blade is supported by a highly refined back lock mechanism that takes this time-tested lock design and elevates it to a new standard of engineering and manufacturing excellence.

The linerless FRN handle features Bi-Directional Texturing™ for an ultra-secure grip and reduces the overall weight of the knife to a scant 2.5 ounces. The handle also houses four sets of threaded inserts moulded directly into the FRN. These allow the improved hourglass clip to be positioned for left or right-side tip-up or tip-down carry. A generously sized lanyard hole also provides a handy attachment point for lanyards, fobs, and safety lines.

A highly advanced evolution of a time-honoured design, the Native 5 Lightweight is an incredibly capable, pocket-sized cutting tool and a shining example of Spyderco’s commitment to making even their best products consistently better.

Probably my if I could only have 1 knife

Posted by James on 28th Mar 2019

I was looking for a bushcrafty type folding knife of quality. After careful elimination of the competition this is what I opted for. Put simply this is the most comfortable user friendly knife I have ever had the pleasure of using. The ergo's are absolutely sublime. I would be happy knowing this was my only knife out in the woods swinging in my hammock. I do prefer the blue FRN of my ukpk but I didn't want the s110v on a knife I bought specifically for wild camping, sharpening in the field and all that stuff. My one gripe with this knife is that I never opted for the maxamet version in grey FRN. One day... lol. The only knife I see on the market that could possibly surpass the native 5 is the shaman. Also on my wish list. Truely a remarkable gem of the highest standards. I do wish Spyderco would make a uk friendly non locking version of this knife. Despite users knowing the tactical look of some spyderco's are really all down to user friendliness, this is less tactical looking than the ukpk in my honest opinion. Therefor more socially acceptable.

    Fantastic Knife

Posted by GOODE on 10th Sep 2018

My first 'premium' EDC knife. Feels fantastic in the hand, finger slot with jimping really inspires confidences when cutting. I've got quite big hands so this was exactly what i was looking for. Can't say much about longevity yet, but the knife is like a razor out of the box. Cut's hairs on my arm, sharper than expensive kitchen knives I've bought in the past. Great service from Hennie, knife arrived sooner than expected! Verry happy
