You wouldn't believe it was possible to improve on Rough Rider quality but with their High Carbon line thats exactly what they have done! And the price stays the same!
The Rough Rider Bow Trapper High Carbon features two blades; one pen and one clip point both made from carbon steel with a Titanium finish to resist rust. The handle is a lovely feature using black G10 with red liners and nickel silver bolsters. It also has a decorative bead attached to a lanyard, which is a very nice touch.
Please be aware that the blade may incorrectly be stamped as 440 stainless steel. This was a factory error that took place at the point of manufacture and the blades are in fact carbon steel.

The last of the "family" of high carbons that I bought and it didn't disappoint, well constructed with good sharp blades, only possible downside for some people is that none of this series that I have (3) has a positive half lock, but I can live without. Bonus lanyard with a bead :)
The materials the knife are built with are great, thicker than most RRs blades. The scales are nice. That's where the good stuff ends. The first blade I was sent had significant blade rub on one of the blades, that went back. The replacement knife was considerably off centre on one blade and didn't rub by the smallest of margins. One backspring is weak but just acceptable while the other has no snap at all, you have to help the blade to close. The only thing that makes the blade safe to use is it needs oiling and the grinding resistance in the joint helps it stay open. It's a bit of a lemon. I'm a bit disappointed with Heinnies, I asked them to look for blade rub on the replacement knife and they did exactly that and no more. I'm sure they know what a blade that should never have gotten through QC looks like and this was one. On the second attempt this was disappointing.
A chunky fist full of knife. Heavier than expected. Blades alligned well, open and shut smoothly. Not very sharp out of the box, but 5 minutes on the stone fixed a good edge. The blades are thick, much better than some of the stainless ones. Scales fitted beautifully. The little tassel is quirky, and easily removed if you do not like it. All this ... and everyday carry. Delighted.
A hard use, well built, knife that fills the hand has an excellent design and is still legal to use in the UK. It is priced to be used hard and designed to do exactly that. The fit and finish are on a par with many other mid priced slipjoint brands and certainly good enough for the money. The walk and talk and soft but acceptable maybe a 3.5 or 4 out 10
I have had a few Rough rider knives and this has been the most expensive of them and the worst for blade rub and finish. 1 tight nail breaker of a spring and 1 that is weak and thee blade flicks out. Chose a cheaper one and you won't regret it.
Only arrived yesterday. A little bit of sharpening needed on second blade. Edges could do with more even grinds. But it's easy fixed. Knife looks really good. Fit and finish is good. Slight blade rub on top of second blade. But it's no custom knife. Bought to be an edc pocket knife and think it'll do fine. Feels solid in use. Opens nice and closes smoothly. I did take off the bead after 10 minutes of using. But I don't need it to look pretty. Blades came well oiled as did rest of knife.
Ordered Sunday Arrived Tuesday. Good service. Knife seems really good for the money. I needed an ECD for work and my Lansky World or my Gerber were getting the usual ooh you shouldn't carry that! So I wanted a more gentlemanly style with functionality as I swap from site to suit in a days work. Opened ten pallets of engine bits and recycled the boxes. Made a door stop out of a bit of pallet. Little knife has done it no problems. Also had a comment from a a guy who said "we must be paying you to much .... Posh expensive new pen knife". 24 hours in and so far so good very pleased with this little one. Will look at more when I get paid.
For the price this is a great little knife. Blade is easy to sharpen and holds an edge well. Finish is very good considering the price - I've had more expensive knives with more play in the blade and worse fitting scales. Bought as a legal edc and hasn't let me down so far. Excellent service from HH as always.
