Benchmade Griptilian

The Benchmade Griptilian is one of the most successful folding knife designs of the 21st century. Introduced in 2001 and designed by Mel Pardue, the model 551 established new standards for what a folding knife could be. It filled the familiar ‘big folder’ niche but did so in a refreshing way that combined lightweight synthetic materials with robust steel liners and the innovative AXIS lock mechanism. More than two decades later, the Griptilian remains one of Benchmade's best-selling knives and a benchmark against which other production folders are measured.

When you first pick up a Grip, the most common reaction is surprise at how light it feels. At 108.3-110g for the full-size model, it weighs roughly half what traditional brass and wood folders do. Benchmade achieves this through Grivory handles backed by stainless steel liners, creating a knife that's light without compromising strength. The 8.8cm modified drop point blade uses S30V steel in current production models, though early versions featured 440C or 154CM. The sabre grind provides excellent versatility.

Available configurations span an impressive range. The full-size 551 features the drop point blade, the 550 offers a sheepsfoot profile, and the 553 provides a tanto option. Each comes in Mini versions (models 555, 556 and 557 respectively) that measure approximately 15% smaller. Blade options include plain edge, partially serrated and various finishes. Handle colours have included black, green, blue, orange, pink, sand and even RealTree camouflage over the years. Premium versions feature G10 handles and upgraded steels like 20CV or M4.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What makes the Griptilian a '21st century classic'?
+
The Benchmade Griptilian earned 'classic' status by setting new standards for folding knives when it launched in 2001. It was one of the first production folders to successfully combine lightweight synthetic handle materials with premium blade steel and a truly ambidextrous locking mechanism. The AXIS lock provides strength and ease of use that traditional lockback or liner lock designs can't match. Over two decades of proven performance, countless variations and consistent popularity have cemented the Griptilian's place as a modern benchmark. The knife continues to sell strongly because it represents an excellent balance of quality, functionality and affordability.
Are there different sizes and blade shapes available?
+
The Benchmade Griptilian range is available in both full size (550 series) and Mini (555 series) configurations. Full size models feature 8.8cm blades, Mini versions offer 7.4cm blades. Blade shapes include the modified drop point (models 551/556), sheepsfoot (models 550/555) and tanto (models 553/557). Each blade shape comes in plain edge or partially serrated options. Handle colours have included black, blue, green, orange, sand, pink and various camouflage patterns over the years. Premium versions feature upgraded materials like G10 handles, 20CV or M4 blade steel and enhanced aesthetics. The extensive range ensures there's a Griptilian configuration for virtually any preference.
How has the Griptilian evolved since 2001?
+
The Benchmade Griptilian has evolved significantly since its 2001 introduction, primarily through blade steel upgrades and handle material variations. Early models featured 440C steel, which later upgraded to 154CM for many years before current production models adopted S30V as standard. The original design by Mel Pardue incorporated the AXIS lock developed by Bill McHenry and Jason Williams. Handle materials have expanded from basic Grivory to include premium G10 options and various colour combinations. Special editions have featured upgraded steels like 20CV, M4 and D2. Despite these evolutions, the core design remains unchanged, testament to how well Pardue got the ergonomics and proportions right from the start.
