    Number 6 Walnut, please...

Posted by Stevo on 9th Apr 2018

The No 6 Opinel is a friendly size, ergonomically comfortable and light in weight without the bulk of the larger models. If you choose to pop the locking ring off, it becomes a UK friendly friction folder, since the blade is less than three inches from handle to tip. The lock can always be pressed back on when needed for use at home or when camping. Be sure to leave the ring at home if you want to EDC. Walnut makes a nice change from the ubiquitous stained beech of the average Opinel. A light sanding inside and out followed by many thin applications of tung oil, inside and out, makes for a durable finish with better water resistance. Allow plenty of time for drying and curing. It actually enhances the agreeably tactile feel inherent with an Opinel. By refinishing in this way, problems associated with moisture absorption are greatly reduced. If a person suffers from a nut allergy, please take precautions when using tung oil; perhaps do a bit of research first, or get some advice from a trusted source. The walnut handle has very uniform grain, and lacks the more dramatic figuring of olive or oak. Yet it has an understated elegance that contrasts well with the satin ground Sandvic blade. Whilst the slight taste of a carbon steel blade can be off-putting in connection with food prep, this excellent stainless steel has no such trait. And Sandvic, with its close, uniform grain, strops to a beautiful edge. Thanks to the thin blade with its famous convex geometry, slicing apples or other fruits and vegetables is all but effortless. Bear in mind that while Sandvic has excellent edge properties, it's corrosion resistance is less than, say, that of a Swiss Army type pocket knife. Just use sensible cleaning methods. And, this goes without saying, but for the benefit of someone new to using pocket knives, don't put it in the dishwasher just because it's blade is made from stainless steel! And don't pry with the blade. Or use it to open a lock. That only works in films, and no doubt the script writer had a good chuckle. The cost of this little pocket knife is modest and the brand is very commonly available. If lost it can be easily replaced. So, quiet but classy, the Opinel No 6 in walnut is a firm favourite. Well recommended.

The more I use OPINEL NO 6, the more it's becoming an EDC companion

Posted by freemanuk on 21st Feb 2015

OPINEL NO 6 Over the years Ive collected many knives, BOKER, SPYDERCO, CKRT, VICTORINOX, SHEFIELD, MORA, and many more. Whilst purchasing these products I've often pondered OPINEL knives but never really give them the attention they deserve, UNTIL NOW. Although this particular product is advertised as NOT UK LEGAL' it can easily be modified to make it such. The OPINEL NO6 with its fine cutting edge is an excellent choice for anybody who wants a good but light weight multipurpose knife. What I like about OPINEL Knife is the shape of their blades. They are good looking, extremely sharp, made from quality steel and are efficient when striking fire steels. Over the last few days I've been cutting paper, cardboard, meat, fruit and opening letters with this knife and as of time. it needs not sharpening - the more I use OPINEL NO 6, the more it's becoming an EDC companion “ If I could afford it “ I'd buy the Company. Thanks again for great service Heinnie Haynes Have a nice day!
