Right off the bat we'll begin by addressing the obvious vertical challenge, which has already stated. No matter how you look at it, the ESEE Candiru is ridiculously tiny for a 1095 outdoorsy knife. I am talking 5-inches-long-with-2-inches-of-edge levels of tiny, yet to me somehow manages not to be even remotely near as limiting as I had originally assumed. I got this as an impulse purchase, and do not regret it, bought as an interesting small carving blade to take to work for field based days, while I think the small mora 02 is a better as a small carver, the candiru is a joy to play with and has been at my side since I purchased it. I will state that you shouldn't be misled into thinking the Candiru is a replacement for a full-sized bushcraft fixed blade, as it's very much a companion to a larger knife for serious expeditions. It is a 3 finger grip handle, and although you can use this for feather sticks, it is uncomfortable. ESEE should be rewarded for sticking with a classic, traditional format that works well. The Esee Candiru is austere, but impeccably constructed with absolutely zero fit and finish flaws or manufacturing defects. Out of the box, it's only downside is the lack of meat on the handle, but that can of course be remedied with the optional scales (I purchased them and it makes this knife useable), I don't recommend a paracord wrap. Only gave 4 stars due to cost, and having to purchase handles separately. So there's absolutely no reason to let that dissuade you from trying this little blade.
This is my 2nd Candiru now as my first one got had away by my dad who was impressed by the candiru's edge retention and ergonomics. Extremely sharp OTB with great powder coating and this one came with a belt clip instead of paracord for neck carry. I highly recommend getting the G10 or Micarta scales as they give the handle a much more complete profile and make it much easier to control the knife. A great back up knife or blade to have to hand while hiking or camping and amazing service from HH who were out of stock when I ordered the candiru saying it would be 14 to 20 days before it was stocked again, received it 2 days later. Saving for an IZULA now
Usual amazing service from HH - Many thanks guys! I'm a bit of an Esee fan and have found this blade to be of their usual quality, small and handy, easy to stick in your pouch/bumbag/possibles bag until its required. great for whittling! The sheath is sufficient and carries the knife safely, but is not of the usual Esee standard in my opinion.
Having the slightly larger Izula, I questioned my need for this knife. But yet again, Esee have a winnner. This thing is fantastic. Comparative in size to the BK13 Remora, the Candiru is made from the same steel as the Izula. It's nice to hold and use for finer tasks. (I've average sized hands). It's also easy to carry in a pocket or backpack with the ambidextrous black Cordura sheath. Some hate this sheath but I like it for its low profile. (it has been mistaken for a pen case by a friend!) True, the cost is high ... but that is what we get here in the UK! This is a good quality small backup/utility knife that performs above its station!
This little knife is a must, I love it. It's not complete however without the micarta scales and I sourced a set from Germany as HH dont stock them. The sheath is a bit of a let down, but does the job, would have preferred a kydex one. The knife which is what it's all about makes up for it. Touched it up on a ceramic rod and it's razor sharp !
I ordered this knife especially to make some custom scales for and underestimated it's profile it's a small knife comparable to the folts minimalist . The category I would put this in is neck knife/bug out back up. Although the sheath, which is well made is unsuited by design for neck carry. The overall quality is good. The Esee warranty being factored into things makes towards some shortfalls i.e it's way overpriced probably due to US-UK import duty but still as always one star for HH whom once again hit the mark with the service provided, thanks guys.
