The BY23 Byrd Tern is a non-locking folding balde knife. As more counties enact strict knife laws, the concept of non-locking knives continues gaining momentum.

The Tern has a black G-10 handle resistant to warping and fading. The blade is held in the open position during cutting by a notched-joint at the knife’s pivot. When closing the blade, the notch produces resistance functionally similar to traditional slip-joint penknife. To enhance control and comfort there’s a deep finger choil which jogs the index finger into position on the bottom of the blade directly under the thumb.

Placing the index finger in the choil, the finger acts as a stop, inhibiting the blade from closing when cutting and allows the user to choke-up closer to the cutting edge with comfort and dexterity. A wire clip positions the folder to carry deep in a pocket, tip-up and ready for use left or right-handed. The Tern has an 8Cr13Mov leaf-shape full flat-ground blade available in a PlainEdge. The handle is assembled with screw-together construction..

Should you wish the pocket clip to be moved, please let us know at the time of purchase. These clips are notoriously tricky to re-fit.

    Great workhorse

I have a few UK legal pocket knives in different makes, styles and sizes. This Byrd Tern gets by far the most use and carry. It just seems the right size and weight to shove in a jeans pocket and keep handy. Not too big, not too small. Gets used for diy, gardening, outdoorsy stuff and general edc. Highly recommended.

    Great budget EDC!

Posted by Lewis Gregory on 18th Jun 2021

I know some people have had quality control issues with theirs, so can't speak for everyone; thankfully my knife came with a razor sharp edge out the box, no side to side movement in the blade, and excellent chimping on the finger choils. The blade opens smoothly and has a satisfying snap into the fully opening position. The blade has a half stop that only stops while closing, so that it opens smoothly. The G10 handle is very grippy with great ergonomics. The wire clip is quite big, but comfortable for me (the Spyderco Dragonfly has a smaller clip that can be fitted to the Byrd Tern.) All in all a great knife for the price that can take a beating.

    Byrd Tern

First-class and as described. Cheaper Spyderco but nevertheless an excellent knife for the money. UK legal carry and must be one of the best. Absolutely no chance of closing on your fingers in use due to choil position relative to the pivot. Very light and easily concealed if necessary.

Best UK Knife on the market

Posted by Josh Hamilton on 6th May 2021

I'm sure any Spyderco fanboy wwill give you a list as long as your arm about why this is an inferior knife, but I don't think 99% of people would ever know that this is half the price as the real deal. It does have the issue of being one hand opening, which could get it taken off you by police if they got up on the wrong side of the bed that day, but even at that, just get another at an absolute bargain of a price.

Very light and extremely sharp. G10 grip very good quality. Finger choil useful although I’ve already nicked my finger through my own stupidity

    Nice EDC

Posted by Simon Heard on 24th Nov 2020

I was considering buying a Spyderco HH edition UKPK, but they have not been available for about a year now. I bought this little Tern, as it seemed a similar shape. Really nice in hand and comfortable to use, due to the finger choil and jimping. Easy to open one handed, and a deep carry wire pocket clip. This knife is sufficient for my needs and half the price of the Spyderco.! (I would still like to own a real Spyderco one day)
