A saw is an essential piece of survival equipment. The
longer the saw, the easier to use, but the harder to
carry. SOG have achieved a nice balance between the
two. The Folding Saw has a 7 in blade of hardened and
tempered steel that makes short order of branches,
small logs, and brush. A comfortable handle helps to
cut deep and true on each and every pull stroke. The
extremely sharp teeth are differentially tempered for
long life and work on green as well as hard wood.

AMAZING - it cuts like a dream and a good size to fit in your gear! All for around £20

    compact and a quick cutter

A little too flex at moments, however it is easy to store in a bag or a even your pocket and when needed, it's an agressive chap once against the wood. Not for felling a 400 year old oak, but for branches up to the size of your thigh, great to have to hand. If you need one, do think about this one.

Still works 2yrs on, but blade can kink

Posted by Clive from Windsor on 26th May 2014

Update having bought this 2yrs ago and used plenty...

Basically this isn't a bad bit of kit but the blade can and will kink if you don't carefully watch the length of your cut: if you pull back too far so the tip of the blade is in the middle of the log you're cutting then on the push forward it can 'catch' and, because it's thin, the blade can then kink. So watch your cut length and you'll reduce chance of bending the blade.

This is more likely if the saw blade isn't vertical (sometimes it won't be) or if you can't get a good view of what you're cutting, which is also sometimes the case.

Best folding saw? Nope. Fair value for £20? I'd say it was.

    Effective folding saw

Posted by Clive from Windsor on 3rd Jul 2012

My 1st folding saw. Goes through arm-thickness logs of oak with ease.

This design will never rival a proper 21" or 30" bow saw - obviously. But, accepting that I really like it. Yes, the blade is thin but that's ideal for a hard wood like oak.

I have a Bahco Laplander saw and I find the two comparable, certainly right now. Maybe the better-saw-pedigree Bahco item will win out after a year of use but right now they're neck and neck.

This SOG item is solid with a soft rubber handle over-moulded to an all-steel frame which feels good in the hand and, in normal use, pretty much indestructible. Locking is dead simple and positive though nothing like as rigid as a knife blade because I guess it doesn't need to be.

Overall a good piece of kit that I'll be taking on future wild camping trips. Way more useful than an axe for travel camping and light + easy to stow. If it continues to work as it does now it'll have been a good buy, especially at the offer price.

    Warning

Posted by Samuel on 7th Apr 2012

I bought this to replace a lost Bahco Laplander as my other SOG products have been outstanding. Unfortunately, this is awful.

It is slow and stiff to open and close, the blade flexes too much, the teeth are poor in design and it rusts. Every thing I have tried to cut with it, I have given up and just gone at it with my axe instead. It's cutting ability is abysmal and unforgivable

I would give it away but I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I still enjoy my other SOG products and will be buying from them again though. Just never a saw

A very poor saw, the blade is too thin or too soft as the blade kinks? Not even very good at cutting. Not happy will try to return.
