Rovyvon Aurora A33

Nice light, good light levels, shame the charging cablead didn't work, but I have a spare of the same pattern.

I’ve had a twin AA mini maglight for years and it’s had quite a few knocks over that time with the lamp being changed only a couple of times but I wanted something that used less power and stayed bright white in light colour, so the A33 was picked up. After one drop from my kitchen work top it ceased to function so I’m not a very happy bunny. Before this happening the torch was great and I really liked the light colour. Maybe mine was just not as well made as others but this rather put me off led torches now unless someone knows of one the will not break the bank and not break after it’s first fall

Just a quick update, a few days ago I received an email from Richard at Heinnie. He informed me that the torch had been priced incorrectly, and I would be receiving a refund of £20 to my bank account to rectify this. This money was in my account within an hour of receiving the email. Putting the torch aside for a moment, this illustrates why I have been a loyal Heinnie customer for nearly 20 years, and spent sums probably into five figures by now…..( three if my wife asks !) I noted they have also revised the Lumen output to 200 on their website, which seems accurate in my opinion, and maybe even erring on the side of caution a little. That puts it into the price point that I think is fair for this torch. It has lived in my front trouser pocket since I got it, and I have found myself using it every day. I have literally dozens of torches from both ends of the price and power spectrum, but this one has become my “go to” torch round the farm, as I can carry it without even noticing it. I’ve also realised that when the top is unscrewed to expose the charging port, then the torch is capable of tail-standing. Overall, I am now happy with this torch, in his review Phoenix says that he doesn’t suffer the “hotspots” or stiff threads that mine has, so maybe mine is a one-off, it certainly isn't enough of an issue to stop me using this torch on a daily basis. I have a Mecarmy SGN1 on my keyring, which puts out 550 Lumens, but is only used in emergencies as it's a bit of a faff using your whole key-ring and keys as a torch…...the Rovyvon is much more practical, its an ergonomic shape, and is light enough to be held in the mouth if need be…...and your teeth are strong enough. In summary, I’ve upped my original review to four stars, as at this price point this is a great little edc torch, it’s strongest features being its light weight, small size, and excellent pocket clip. I have loads of torches of a higher power and arguably better quality, but this seems to be the torch version of the no-frills reliable penknife that you chuck in your back pocket and end up using for most of the jobs you bought your £200 knives for.

I got an email from HH on 15.2.21 giving me a £20.00 REFUND because of a pricing error making the price £29.95. I note HH has also changed the output to 200 lumens but still states an impossible maximum beam distance of 300M. The enclosed instruction manual states 40M. I think this is more realistic but still generous. This in no way changes my review. Having had the opportunity to use it in the cold, snow and rain I now know the dragon scale knurling does nothing to improve the grip and have made my own improvement by using “Bondic” to make a series of raised bumps around and along the body. Unlike Jon M in his review of 12.2.21 I have no problem with the beam pattern nor with unscrewing the tail-cap to get to the charging port so suggest Rovyvon maybe have a quality control issue. Just so you know what you’re buying; 4 outputs, 200 lumens MAX, 40M beam distance, relatively light, good run times, not particularly grippy, huge and solid carry clip and now £29.95.

This torch has been reduced to 29.95 from 49.95. I paid 49.95 so as well as not being as bright as advertised its been overpriced.

Manual supplied says 200 lumens and it’s definitely not comparable with my other torches that are 400 lumens so disappointing on that level. Otherwise not a bad little torch.

This torch would be a great little purchase at £25, but is absolutely no way worth the five pence short of £50 that it is being sold for. Firstly the positives.....the anodized finish in Desert Tan looks lovely in the flesh, a nice change from my dozens of boring black torches. The switch takes a decent amount of pressure to click on, and is unlikely to switch on in your pocket or accidentally, unlike many of the newer torches that use overly-light micro switches. The four levels are nicely chosen, the low is bright enough to use if I need to get something from a bedside drawer etc without waking my other half, and the middle two levels are nicely spaced. The pocket clip is wide and well fixed to the body, and is springy enough to hold the torch in place securely without needing fingernails-snapping levels of effort to withdraw it. The torch is also extremely light, and adds a negligible weight to your pocket. The downsides…. The torch is advertised by Heinnie as having 400 Lumens on max. The leaflet that comes with the torch, and indeed all reviews and specs on Rovyvons website state that the torch has only 200 lumens on Max. I tested this against a number of flashlights including my Fenix TK72R set to 400 lumens, and also my Nebo Mycro Headtorch, which has a 400 lumen Turbo mode. The Rovyvon did not come anywhere near the brightness of either of these on 400. Also, the beam pattern of the Rovyvon is not sharp and clearly defined, there are “hotspots” within the beam pattern, and the flood is not even. The beam distance is advertised as being 300 metres, again this is very overstated. I live on a farm, and know the measured distances between fields, I have one field that has a boundary wall 200 Metres away, and on a completely dark night, with no light pollution the Rovyvon would not illuminate the wall to any degree. My final gripe is the charging port. The method of accessing it is very stiff and fiddly, and it is not immediately obvious how it is accessed, as the instruction sheet is very vague. I'm not sure if mine was machined to a particularly tight tolerance, or had some grit in the threads, but it was extremely difficult to unscrew, and has required several wipes over with a light gun oil to free up. Having said all that, I do not hate this torch, I am disappointed that it does not meet it’s advertised spec, and I think it is extremely overpriced, but it’s very compact dimensions and light weight, coupled with the convenience of its built in rechargeable battery make it something that I have already found an invaluable little companion around the farm, it’s not hugely powerful, but at least it doesn’t keep “stepping down” in power from its highest setting like most torches do. My immediate initial reaction to this torch was that I was going to return it, but I think I’m glad that I didn’t, hopefully as time goes on, I won’t come to regret that decision.

More because it has 4 outputs: 0.8, 15, 60, and less, 200 lumens. Yes, 200 lumens. That’s what the user manual in the box says. On the box it came in it says 400, like it says with HH. The Rovyvon website says 220. Whatever the maximum output it’s bright and, whatever the maximum output, it says it’ll last an hour. In “moonlight” mode it says 56 hrs. There’s no last mode memory that I can find and, it seems, always turns on in moonlight mode. The carry clip is huge and solid. It comes with a charging cable (USB/Micro USB) and a spare on/off tail-switch cap. I’m not convinced the body is that grippy but time will tell. For those of you that care about such things this model has a Cree XP-G2 LED.
