The Rough Rider Coal Miner series is a good’un, and this UK Friendly Carry option is a fantastic addition. Featuring not one, but two 400 stainless steel blades, a sheepsfoot and a pen. The larger blade (sheepsfoot) is 7cm in length and has ‘Coal Miner’ etched into the blade. The smaller of the blades is the pen and is 5.8cm in length.

The black jigged bone handle looks really smart, and really helps create that coal miner feel to the knife. The knife is also finished off with a silver nickel bolster and Rough Rider inlay shield.

If you are after a very reasonably priced knife which offers lots of functionality and feels like a throwback to bygone days then this knife is perfect for you.

    Fantastic

Seems enormous, but is UK legal. Probably my most-used knife. Razor sharp out of the box, great half stops, well worth the money.

    No nonsense.

Nice in the hand. I’m probably going to knock this around a lot using it. As it should be.

    Dirt on the Coal Miner

Posted by Michael on 18th Mar 2021

The Coal Miner is a great knife for the money. It’s well proportioned and heavy in the hand(110gm/172mm). Strong liners ensure secure blades with a reliable half stop giving a heavy snap on closing. No gaps in the liners and its sharp out of the box. Overall this is a quality work knife and a must have to your collection.

    Excellent!

Posted by JimC on 10th Mar 2021

    Having carried a knife of of one kind or another for around 55 years (moved on to lock-blades - but then they became 'illegal' in UK) I came across the Rough Rider brand when looking for knife that might be traditional, legal, sensible, functional, strong and fairly cheap - and so far, the Coal Miner fulfils all of the above! I did struggle to get the blades open at first, but having oiled the pivots and springs, then opened/closed the blades about 40 or 50 times - all is well! It helps that the 'nail nick' is deeper than on many other makes of course. When being opened/closed, both blades now 'park' perfectly at 90 degrees to make things a lot safer for your fingers. Came reasonably sharp, but I've since got it like a razor, and the edge holds really well. Quite a bulky knife, but that's good thing in my head - feels really convincing 'in your fist' when you're being violent towards a stick. What I like about 'traditional' knives is that they tend to look more like a tool, rather than a weapon - which makes them more 'friendly' . . . ;¬}

    RR COAL MINER

Very good value kit. Sure, if you want to pay for more thsn you need - or a name - theres other stuff out there. However I don't really see the need. It's a great wee knife with 2 useful blades, decent steel that I"ve found takes a good edge. Well put together with a good finish. Add to that RR guarantee and you have a definate winner. For the money? 5⭐

    An absolute gem for pennies

Excellent knife for the money, fit and finish was very good on mine rivalling more expensive knives that I have. I find this knife gets the most pocket time with it's old school charm and wicked edge. For the money just buy it, you won't be disappointed

    Rough Rider Coal Miner

A nice solid chunky pocket knife with a strong back-spring and positive half-stop.The only minor detraction is that the small blade is very stiff to open but hopefully it'll wear in over time

    Rough Rider Coal Miner

Received via the usual blistering HH delivery...how do they do it?.. Not yet used in earnest, but I'm impressed with an authoritatively weighted feel and heft. Arrived with the main blade having a minor and quickly fixed uneven bevel, the smaller blade has the stronger return spring. I'm really taken with the old-fashion look. Scales feel just right, finish and fit are above expectations.. the whole look and feel is reminiscent of the folder used by my long. departed Grandad, the most inept mender of kids shoes.
