Based in the Portland Works, Sheffield where over 100 years ago Harry Brearley developed stainless steel for cutlery use, Michael May uses centuries old craftsmanship and knife patterns to create traditional pocket knives. By owning a Michael May knife you can claim your own little piece of history and be at the forefront of a reinvigorated and rich cutlery making past.

The Michael May Barlow Walnut Folding Knife is a superb double bladed little folder in the traditional Barlow style. The blades are made from O1 carbon steel with a thumb nick for opening and a small file worked section near the pivot. The substantial handle is made from Walnut wood scales with a brass bolster. The back spine again features beautiful decorative file work with brass liners.

Both blades are non-locking and under three inches long so is legal to carry within the UK.

    Michael May Barlow, two blade.

Posted by Paul Graham on 11th Sep 2024

Now to the knife. It has to be said that the file worked spine on a double bladed knife is something to behold and that’s the case here. The file work is gorgeous, I got the walnut scales and they are lovely. Initially I thought the blades a little rudimentary especially compared to an eye witness premier blade. They are not mirror finished etc but then I realised I wanted this knife to be a user so that’s just fine. The eye witness would cause me pain to use for anything but the lightest duties. Be aware, when it arrives the scales will be a tad dry, Michael has better things to do than caress oil into them. A few coats rubbed in and they will shine. Also it will appear clean but give the knife a good rub down with a cloth upon arrival, you can thank me later! Superb, quality workmanship. These knives are traditional handmade products, steeped in history and each is unique, yes there will be very minor imperfections ,but, mad though it sounds, that’s part of what you are paying for! If you’re looking for cnc machined perfection look elsewhere, me? I’ve struck gold right here!!! Enjoy!

Built for work, with a bit of flash.

Obadiah Barlow was acknowledged in his own time for making well built working knives. Michael May follows in those footsteps. Particularly with this one. Don't expect perfection. That's not what these knives are about.
